"We Will Ensure Nigeria Qualify For 2026 World Cup" — Etebo

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo says he and his teammates will do everything possible to make sure Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 World Cup.

The Eagles missed this year’s World Cup in Qatar after losing on away goals to the Black Stars of Ghana in the playoffs in March.

Etebo was in action for the Eagles as a 1-1 draw in Abuja was enough to qualify Ghana after the first leg ended goallessly.

And speaking about missing out on this year’s edition in Qatar, Etebo said he had high hopes of playing in his second World Cup.

“I have had good memories, was at the last edition in Russia and I had hopes of playing in Qatar, but it was not meant to be,” he was quoted on brila.net.

“It hurts not playing in Qatar but as a team, we will ensure we qualify for the next edition.”

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The three countries featured in Qatar with the United States making it to the round of 16 while Mexico and Canada crashed out in the group stage.

Today (Wednesday), Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, will travel to Bissau, Guinea Bissau.

It has been learned that President Buhari will be awarded Guinea Bissau’s highest honour.

The award recognizes Buhari’s contributions to the West African nation’s political stability.

Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Following the invitation of Guinea Bissau President Umaro Sissolo Embalo, the Nigerian leader would dedicate a road in the capital city named after him.

President Buhari’s leadership role on the West Coast will be highlighted at the event, which will be held at the presidential villa.

Some of the responsibilities include regularly counseling and motivating leaders on the virtues of peace, political inclusion, and integrity, as well as fostering a strong economy that drives collective prosperity.

During his visit to Bissau, President Buhari and the Nigerian delegation will hold a bilateral meeting.

The Nigerian president will be accompanied on the trip by Amb. Zubairu Dada, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Maj. Gen. Mohammed B. Monguno (Rtd), and Amb Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.

Alula said her father’s death has left her feeling “blank.”

She said her father is singing with the angels.

Sammie Okposo who died on November 25 will be buried on Friday, December 15th.

Igbo youth leaders under the aegis of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the apex socio-political youth group in the South East geopolitical zone has appealed to the Senator representing Abia North, Sen Orji Uzor Kalu to organise a course on how to attract projects for his colleagues from South East region.

In a statement on Tuesday titled, “COSEYL To Senator Orji Kalu: Organize A Course tagged ” Project 101″ To Teach Some South East Lawmakers On How To Attract And Execute Projects” and signed by Hon. Goodluck Egwu Ibem, the President General, COSEYL expressed happiness with the result-oriented representation of the Senate Chief Whip Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who according to the group has within a short period of just 3 years at the Senate attracted mouth-watering projects that have brought smiles on the faces of Abia North Senatorial district and other parts of the South East.

The statement reads further, “Senator Kalu has surprised Abia North constituents who are really amazed and mesmerized about his overwhelming performance at the red chambers.

Police Say No Ransom Was Paid Before Release Of Benue Commissioner, Others

The Benue State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Ekpe Ogbu, and three others abducted on Sunday, have been released.

Our correspondent gathered that the victims were released around 3.30pm on Tuesday, after three days in captivity.

One of the commissioner’s political associates, who spoke to our correspondent on the phone on condition of anonymity, said they were dropped along Otukpo/Ado Road.

As of the time of filing this report, the released victims were said to be on their way to Makurdi.

The state Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, who confirmed the release of the commissioner and others, said no ransom was paid.

Ogbu, alongside his driver, aide and one other, was abducted on Sunday while coming from a burial.

FCCPC Expresses Worry Over High Number Of Girls Smoking Shisha In Cross River

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, PCCPC, has expressed concern over the high number of girls using Shisha tobacco as stimulant in Cross River State.

The PCCPC, which carried out checks on tobacco shops and sensitisation exercises in Calabar and the hinterlands of the state, observed that the drug, which is predominantly used by girls, is in widespread use in places like Ikom, Ugep and Obubra in central part of the state.

Speaking with newsmen after checks on cigarette packs in shops and sales points, Mr. Chibuike Nwokorie , Programme Officer with Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance said the drug is seen as a trending lifestyle, which is not harsh like other hard drugs but that such assumption is erroneous because it is harmful and addictive.

“A survey by our team across the state shows that those hooked on Shisha see it as just a puff of smoke that does not affect their organs but that is wrong because it is addictive and harmful. It is the gateway to other hard drugs and must be stopped immediately,” he said.

He said the sale of ground tobacco called snuff, which is sold in little plastic cans is also widespread in the state and such cans have no warning or pictorial signs on the health danger to users on the cans to caution users of the dangers of taking the snuff.”

“We have told them that this time we are only carrying out checks and sensitization exercises but next time we will impound snuff and any other tobacco products we see on sale here which have no bold pictorial warnings on their packs or cans through which such tobacco is dispensed,” he said.

Mr. Nwokorie noted that yearly, tobacco use is responsible for the death of over eight million people around the world.

How Angry Boko Haram Terrorists Killed 33 ISWAP Fighters’ Wives To Avenge Commander’s Death

Irate Boko Haram terrorists have killed at least 33 wives of Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) fighters in Sambisa to avenge the killing of their Commander, Malam Aboubakar (Munzir), and 15 other fighters, who were neutrialised in a deadly infighting.

Since December 3, a top Boko Haram leader in charge of Mandara Moutain, Ali Ngulde, has led hundreds of fighters armed with weapons from Mandara Mountain to wage war against the ISWAP in Sambisa Forest.

The attack began with a failed negotiation initiated by the Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād (Boko Haram) terrorist group, inviting its rival group, ISWAP, that they were ready to surrender themselves (Mubayi’a) to IS/ISWAP leadership.

Intelligence source revealed to Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad, that unknown to the ISWA group, Ngulde and his team had staged an ambush against them in which at least 12 of them were killed in Yuwe while others escaped with bullet wounds.

In the aftermath of the encounter, Boko Haram members seized four Hilux trucks mounted with weapons belonging to their rivals and burnt another.

A source said that shortly after the victory, the Boko Haram fighters mobilised more fighters from Abu Ikilima’s camp at Gaizuwa, Gabchari, Mantari and Mallum Masari to attack more ISWAP positions in Ukuba, Arra and Sabil Huda and Farisu, killing about 23 of ISWAP fighters.

Few hours later, a top ISWAP leader, Ba’ana Chingori, called for a declaration of war and led a column of fighters to carry out reprisal attack on the Boko Haram in Farisu.

The attack paid off as the ISWAP neutrialised 15 Boko Haram terrorists including a unit Commander, Malam Aboubakar (Munzir) and seized seven motorcycles from them.

The ISWAP group later retreated and took position at the camp of Izzah. Thereafter, they moved to Garin Abbah, located about two kilometers away, where they pinned down to wait for the Boko Haram.

But instead of going to meet the ISWAP rivals to continue the fight, the Boko Haram elements did a detour and headed to where the wives of the ISWAP fighters were located and killed 33 of them.

It will be seen in the coming days how ISWAP fighters will react to the brutal killing of their wives by the Boko Haram elements.

Hisbah To Destroy 18,000 Bottles Of Beer In Kano, Vows To End Immoral Activities

The Kano State Hisbah Board has intercepted a vehicle loaded with over 18,000 bottles of beer in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

The Commander General of the board, Sheikh Harun Ibn Sina, on Tuesday, said the truck was intercepted on Gwarzo Road on its way to Kano on Monday.

Ibn Sina noted that the law establishing the board prohibited the sale and consumption of beer and other intoxicants.

He said the agency had intensified campaigns to enlighten the public on the danger of engaging in immoral activities.

The commander general commended the head of the anti-intoxicants unit of the board and his team for mitigating “the spread of beer and other harmful drugs in the state.”

He said the board currently had in its custody over 10 trucks loaded with the commodity, stressing that it would secure a court order to destroy the intoxicants.

Speaking earlier, the Head of the anti-intoxicant unit, Jamilu Yakasai, said the vehicle was intercepted following a tip-off by a resident.

Recall that in February 2022, the board destroyed over three million bottles of assorted beer, worth millions of naira, after securing a court order.

A bill seeking to criminalize the abandonment of newly born babies by parents with a penalty of six months jail term, yesterday, passed for second reading at the House of Representatives.

Tilted, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Child Rights Act, Cap. C50, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to impose sanction on any parent who abandons a new born child and absconds after birth; and for Related Matters (HB. 1442),” it was sponsored by Sergius Ogun.

In the lead debate on the general principle of the bill at plenary, Ogun said the bill craved for a minor amendment to the Child’s Right Act to stop parents from abandoning their child after delivery.

He said a new sub-section 3 would be introduced into the extant section 14 of the principal Act, explaining that the new sub-section would stipulate that a parent who abandons a child at the time or place of his birth, he shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction be liable to fine of two hundred thousand naira or imprisonment for six months or both.

In his contribution to the bill, Ossai Nicholas Ossai also supported the bill.

“I support this bill, I further add that it’s a duty of parents who have brought children to world to care for them. But at the same time government has a duty to also compliment the duty of parents. Every person has obligation to contribute to society. We have social security in USA. Whereby you are not working and you are not able to take care of your child, social security is there. It is in that principle that majority of our northern states are yet to domesticate this law, this law must have a human face,” he said.

But in his remarks, the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who presided over the session countered Ossai on the domestication of the bill, saying he veered off from the current debate.

The bill was later put to a voice vote, where a majority of the lawmakers supported it through second reading.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has again provided an insight into his source of wealth.

Tinubu in an interview on BBC in London said he was the most investigated and most accused former governor yet nothing has been found on him.

Many Nigerians had challenged Tinubu to explain his source of stupendous wealth and this has been a recurring issue in the current electioneering for the 2023 election, Daily Trust reports.

During the interview, he accused his critics of envy, explaining that he had a lot of investments which yielded profit.

Responding to the question on the corruption allegation, he said, “You got to know how to analyse and how to ask questions, not in the accusatory format.

“Are they enemies of wealth, if they are not enemies of wealth, investments do yield. I have an example of Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in America and in the world. He started from stock buying. I inherited great real estate, I turned the values around.

“I am not denying my wealth, I was the most investigated, the most accused governor for eight years, up to 2007 and since I left the office, I am still there, I have not taken any government appointment.”

Asked on the allegation that he was taking a certain share of the revenue being generated in Lagos State where he governed between 1999 and 2007, he retorted, “Hey excuse me, share what? Have they proven it? IMF has investigated the record in Lagos. What is wrong with them? It is envy.”
