Constituency Projects: Sen. Kalu Formally Receives Award Plaque, Vows To Halt Rural-Urban Migration

Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on Wednesday formally received the Award plaque for winning the “Overall Best Constituency Projects and Human Relations Award” at the 2022 Senate Press Corps award held earlier in 2022.

The award ceremony organised by the Apex media body of the Senate had in June honoured Kalu in recognition of his efforts at executing massive developmental projects and promoting a healthy communication synergy amongst his colleagues, constituents and workers within the National Assembly.

Fielding questions from the press shortly after he was presented with the plaque, the former governor stated that his goal is to mitigate rural-urban migration through the provision of basic amenities for residents within rural areas.

Kalu told the journalists that the movement of youths from the rural to urban areas in search of greener pastures can be discouraged by enhancing the livelihood of communities through the provision of basic public utilities, and cottage industries among others.

The need to create avenues for rural dwellers to generate income within rural areas was also canvassed by the award winning Senator, citing an Example with a recent deal he signed with PowerChina, Monday, in Abuja, for the establishment of five Agro-Industrial parks, worth $500 million.

On his re-election bid, Kalu expressed confidence in his scorecard , noting that the people will vote for him and his All Progressives Congress Party as a result of the massive infrastructural developments erected within their localities in the last over three and a half years.

Kalu reinstated his commitment to put the people first; “We are strong stakeholders with the people and we believe in the people. It is my job any day I will be in politics to leave the people then that means I have left politics, so the people come first, must also come last for me.

“We need to create an income based revenue for our people to be able to earn income and stop migrating to urban areas and want to stop people living in the rural areas coming to urban areas. I’m sure you would have heard about the business partnership venture we’re doing with the Chinese in Abia North District and it is purely private business driven. And our duty is to continue making what will benefit the people because if we are in politics and the people are not happy we should not also be happy.

Asked about his thoughts on his return bid, Kalu expressed confidence in emerging victorious , noting that he is his own rival as no other candidate could match his popularity and acceptance by the people.

Kalu remained upbeat at securing ninety eight percent Victory for his party; “Election is coming and I’m not shaky because I know I am with the people. The people are there. The election in Abia North I can tell you people frankly it is Orji Kalu versus Orji Kalu , there is no other candidate and that is the truth. People might be taking money from people they want to run for election, but they’re not really the election. The election there is Orji Kalu versus Orji Kalu.

It’s only one party in our area and that party is the All Progressive’s Congress (APC) and people will vote on 98% APC in that senatorial district. I can bet anybody with money. It’s not something. It is not rocket science so it is me versus me.

“It’s my attitude to the people that will make them give to another person, there’s no vacancy in the area.

The former expressed gratitude to the organisation for finding him worthy to be entrusted with such a prestigious award amongst other lawmakers like himself, Kalu said the award will spur him to do more for his people.

Germany Police Arrests 25 Persons Accused Of Plotting Coup

Germany Police Arrests 25 Persons Accused Of Plotting Coup

Twenty-five people have been arrested in raids across Germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.

The group of far-right and ex-military figures is said to have prepared for a “Day X” to storm the Reichstag parliament building and seize power.

A minor aristocrat named as Prince Heinrich XIII, 71, is alleged to have been central to their plans.

According to federal prosecutors, he is one of two alleged ringleaders among those arrested across 11 German states.

The plotters are said to include members of the extremist Reichsbürger [Citizens of the Reich] movement, which has long been in the sights of German police over violent attacks and racist conspiracy theories. They also refuse to recognize the modern German state.

Other suspects came from the QAnon movement who believe their country is in the hands of a mythical “deep state” involving secret powers pulling the political strings.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser assured Germans that authorities would respond with the full force of the law “against the enemies of democracy”.

An estimated 50 men and women are alleged to have been part of the group, said to have plotted to overthrow the republic and replace it with a new state modeled on the Germany of 1871 – an empire called the Second Reich.

“We don’t yet have a name for this group,” said a spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor’s office.

Three thousand officers took part in 130 raids across much of the country, with two people arrested in Austria and Italy. Those detained were due to be questioned later in the day. As many as eight of the arrests took place in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann tweeted that a major anti-terror operation was taking place and a suspected “armed attack on constitutional bodies was planned”. The interior minister said later that the investigation would peer into the “abyss of a terrorist threat from the Reichsbürger sphere”.

The federal prosecutor’s office said the group had been plotting a violent coup since November 2021 and members of its central “Rat” (council) had since held regular meetings.

They had already established plans to rule Germany with departments covering health, justice, and foreign affairs, the prosecutor said. Members understood they could only realize their goals by “military means and violence against state representatives”, which included carrying out killings.

Investigators are thought to have got wind of the group when they uncovered a kidnap plot last April involving a gang who called themselves United Patriots.

They too were part of the Reichsbürger scene and had allegedly planned to abduct Health Minister Karl Lauterbach while also creating “civil war conditions” to bring about an end to Germany’s democracy.

A former far-right AfD member of the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, is suspected of being part of the plot, and of being lined up as the group’s justice minister. Birgit Malsack-Winkelmann, who was among the 25 people arrested, returned to her role as a judge last year and a court has since turned down attempts to dislodge her.

A prominent lawyer was penciled in to handle the group’s foreign affairs, with Prince Heinrich as a leader.

Aristocrat ‘fuelled by conspiracy theories

Heinrich XIII comes from an old noble family known as the House of Reuss, which ruled over parts of the modern eastern state of Thuringia until 1918. All the male members of the family were given the name Heinrich as well as a number.

Descendants still own a few castles and Heinrich himself is said to have a hunting lodge at Bad Lobenstein in Thuringia.

The rest of the family have long distanced themselves from the minor aristocrat, with one spokesman telling local broadcaster MDR during the summer that Heinrich was an “at times confused” man who had fallen for “misconceptions fuelled by conspiracy theories”.

As well as a shadow government, the plotters allegedly had plans for a military arm run by a second ringleader identified as Rüdiger von P.

They were made up of active and former members of the military, officials believe and included ex-elite soldiers from special units. The aim of the military arm was to eliminate democratic bodies at the local level, prosecutors said.

Rüdiger von P is suspected of trying to recruit police officers in northern Germany and of having an eye on army barracks too. Bases in the states of Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, and Bavaria were all inspected for possible use after the government was overthrown, officials said.

One of those under investigation had been a member of the Special Commando Forces, and police searched his home and his room at the Graf-Zeppelin military base in Calw, southwest of Stuttgart.

Another suspect has been identified as Vitalia B, a Russian woman who was asked to approach Moscow on Heinrich’s behalf. The Russian embassy in Berlin said in a statement that it did not “maintain contacts with representatives of terrorist groups and other illegal entities”.

Several violent attacks have been linked to Germany’s far-right in recent years. In 2020, a 43-year-old man shot dead nine people of foreign origin in the western town of Hanau, and a Reichsbürger member was jailed for killing a policeman in 2016.

The Reichsbürger movement is estimated to have as many as 21,000 followers, of whom around 5% are considered to belong to the extreme right.

US Senate Passes Bill To Curb Private Ownership Of Big Cats

US Senate Passes Bill To Curb Private Ownership Of Big Cats

A bill to restrict the private ownership of big cats like lions and tigers in the US has passed by unanimous consent in the Senate.

The Big Cat Public Safety Act would stop people from keeping the animals as pets and from them being exposed to public petting and photo opportunities.

Efforts to curb private ownership have increased in the wake of the Netflix documentary series Tiger King.

The bill now needs to be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley, who introduced the bill into the House, said on social media that it will mean “a lot of big cats will live better lives”.

According to estimates from conservationists, as many as 7,000 tigers are living in the US either in zoos or privately owned – nearly double the estimated 3,890 tigers living in the wild worldwide.

Many in the US are on public display, where the hunt for profits in some privately-owned facilities is alleged to drive a “relentless breeding cycle that floods the exotic pet trade with surplus tigers who have outgrown the cub stage”, according to the Animal Welfare Institute.

What’s more, the institute alleges facilities that offer cub petting have been known to kill tigers once they can no longer be used to make money.

Under the new bill, possession of lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, cougars, or any hybrid of these species would be limited to wildlife sanctuaries, universities, and certified zoos.

Those on display would need to be kept at least 15 feet (4.5 metres) away from the public or behind a barrier to prevent contact.

However, current owners of big cats will be allowed to keep their animals – as long as they don’t allow direct contact between them and the public and register them with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Susan Millward, executive director of the Animal Welfare Institute, has said the Big Cat Public Safety Act “will end the horrific exploitation of big cats and bolster public safety”.

“These beautiful but powerful predators deserve to live in the wild, not be kept in captivity for people’s entertainment—even as cubs,” she added.

Carole Baskin, one of the stars of the Tiger King series and the founder of the Big Cat Rescue sanctuary, has become a champion of the bill and has said she is “thrilled” by the outcome.

Rigging Elections Now Nearly Impossible In Nigeria – President Buhari
President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says things are now hard for those who rig elections in Nigeria, as a such criminal act is now difficult to perpetrate.

The President made this known at State House, Abuja, when he received the West African Elders Forum Pre-Election Mediation Mission, led by former Sierra Leonean President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

He restated that the 2023 general elections would be free, fair, and credible, as manipulations would not be allowed in any form.

“Thank you for accepting to do this service for our sub-region,” the President told his guests, citing off-season elections held in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun States, as a pointer to the fact that the Federal Government would allow people to choose leaders they want.

“That right is guaranteed,” President Buhari said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.

“We are settling down, and making progress. People should vote for whomever they want, in whatever party. We shall not allow anyone to use money and thugs to intimidate the people. Nigerians know better now, they are wiser and know that it is better to dialogue than to carry weapons. Elections are even more difficult to rig now.”

Former President Koroma, who led a team made of Fatoumata Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations, and Ann Iyonu, Executive Director of Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, said they had met with stakeholders across the parties, civil society, and Independent National Electoral Commission, among others, “and we commend you for making it clear both locally and internationally that the elections would be free and fair.”

He commended President Buhari for not listening to voices that might have tried to convince him to seek a third term in office, against the laws of the country, noting that “other countries look up to Nigeria for direction.”

“When we had issues in Sierra Leone and Liberia, it was Nigeria that came in to stabilize the system,” the former President said.

He urged President Buhari to look into other areas of concern as raised by the stakeholders, including security, and “issues that may cast doubts on the clarity and credibility of the elections.”

The Federal Government says all the demands made by the EndSARS protesters in October 2020 have been met.

Minister for Police Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Maigari-Dingyadi, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja, at the Public Dissemination of the Post EndSARS/ Research and Training of Police Oversight Agencies on Oversight Mechanisms.

The event was organized by Cleen Foundation, with support from MacArthur Foundation.

“Without prejudice to the findings contained in your EndSARS Research Findings, let me assure this gathering and Nigerians in general.

“That the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has fully implemented the demands presented by peaceful protesters in October 2020, which was unfortunately hijacked by unpatriotic elements.

“It would be recalled that the government expeditiously approved the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which was foremost among the demands of the protesters.

“The five demands of the protesters, otherwise known as the “five for five” demands, also included setting up of independent investigation, justice for victims of police infractions, and re-evaluation of disbanded SARS personnel.

“And an upward review of police emolument has been fully implemented by the government towards emplacing permanent solutions to trust deficit between the police and the citizenry”, the minister said.

Maigari-Dingyadi added that the Police Public Complaints Committee was set up at the ministerial level to give citizens an additional layer of redress against acts of infractions by the police.

He said the committee had representatives from the ministry, Police Service Commission, Nigeria Police, Nigerian Human Rights Commission, and NGOs among others.

Maigari-Dingyadi advised Nigerians to channel their petitions to the committee through Whatsapp number 09062547073 or voice call to 08081257561, 08187635365, 08081257561.

He added that petitions could also be submitted via https://ppcc policeaffairs.gov. ng or directly to his office at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja.

“Please permit me to reiterate the fact that policing as the fulcrum upon which security revolves, requires inclusiveness to realize its fundamental objectives.

“Our germane desire to promote food security, health security, economic buoyancy and all forms of human security, through community-based and technology-led policing, requires critical support of all stakeholders”, he said.

The minister called for synergy between Nigeria and critical stakeholders in the review of police regulations and other initiatives to ensure proper reform of the police service.

He claimed that many false allegations and stories about Tinubu had recently surfaced on social media, emphasizing that the committee would counter any social misinformation.

He said;

Apart from contributing financially and in materials in this election, we are in the process of setting up a committee that will be dedicated to the debunking of social media misinformation directed at our party and its presidential candidate. There’s so much at stake in the forthcoming elections, it is not surprising therefore that in desperation, some people have turned social media to the harbinger of slander and blackmail. The role of the committee among others will be to counter any lies or misinformation towards our principal candidate with facts that will invalidate their tissue of lies.

Apata said the party will maintain and sustain the continuity necessary to leave an indelible footprint of growth, development, and stability for future generations. The APC chieftain said the chapter had contributed resources to ensure the party wins the forthcoming presidential poll.

We are determined to do even more in the current political dispensation to ensure that our great party maintains and sustains the continuity necessary to leave an indelible footprint of growth, development, and stability for generations yet unborn in Nigeria.”We are also blessed to have Alhaji Ahmed Bola Tinubu, a transformative and visionary politician as our flagbearer. We are already making our presence felt in Nigeria by working with and supporting the Diaspora directorate ably headed by Prince Ade Omole. It is also great to have a prominent member of the APC Canada Chapter in the person of Dr. Abiola Oshodi as a member of the presidential campaign council.

Recall that last week, gunmen attacked and killed six people in another village of Goronyo local government area of the state.

A similar episode also took place early last year where suspected gunmen killed more than 40 people.
