2023: Abia Does Not Have Time For Governor Who'll Come To Learn On The Job — Mascot Kalu [VIDEO] — Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the governorship candidate of Action Peoples Party, APP in Abia State, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu has said the state needs a person with experience to lead and not someone who will come to learn on the job.

According to him, he has gone around 13 local governments in the state community by the community where he discovered that the situation is dire and requires a leader that will swing into action immediately.

The former Abia Chief of Staff who spoke on ABN TV’s Political Perspective said among those jostling to succeed Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu next year, he is the most experienced and has a lot of value to add in the development of the state.

“Having been a Chief of Staff, operated as an international businessman, the office of the governor requires a lot of relationships, a lot of tolerance, a lot of training.

“A lot of decisions are spontaneous and if it is not made right, it could be destructive. If you are not well groomed for it, it will take you time to learn. I have the prerequisite training this office needs, having been the Chief of Staff for over three years.

“I functioned as governor while I was there with the authorities and instructions of the governor. So it’s not a new place that I’ve not been to. Many people do not have that experience. No matter how smart you are, you need a minimum of 3 years to fit in and Abia does not have such time,” he said.

Speaking on why he lost the election to represent Aba North/South Federal Constituency in 2019, Mascot Kalu accused members of his former party, the APC in Abia South of receiving bribes to undermine the party’s chances.

He accused the PDP of rigging the election but even at that, he believes he won according to results at the polling units.

He said he did not seek redress in the court as a result of time constraints, insisting that his victory was manipulated during the computation of results.

A 49-year-old man, Lawrence Itape, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife, Rebecca, to death during an argument over water to take his bath, in their apartment at Seaside Estate, Badore, Ajah area of Lagos.

The father of two, as gathered, returned home from work Monday night to discover there was no water for him to take his bath.

He was said to have scolded his wife on why she did not buy water in the empty jerricans at home as residents of the area are used to buying water from designated boreholes in the community.

Edo State-born Itape reportedly ordered his wife to accompany him to buy water in three jerricans, for him to bathe and drink.

However, on the way, his wife was said to have diverted to buy some batteries for their wall clock that had stopped working. Her action stirred up another round of argument as her husband accused her of always buying the wrong battery.

Itape, according to eyewitnesses, said both of them had agreed that she should not buy batteries for their wall clock again, as she was always buying the wrong ones.

Explaining, Itape said: “During the quarrel, she abused my parents, which was a regular thing whenever we quarrelled.

“When we got home, she continued abusing me. I climbed upstairs, and she followed me, cursing me. When I came down the stairs, she still followed me. I got angry.“

In the ensuing quarrel, Itape was said to have made for the kitchen knife and stabbed his 47-year-old Delta State-born wife in the neck, thereby leading to her death.

Their two children, ages seven and 10, were said to have cried to their neighbours for help when the fight was ongoing. One of the deceased’s cousins, who gave her name simply as Rita, said there were multiple piercings on the corpse.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hudenyin, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred at about 11.30 pm on Monday.

He said: “A team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Lagbansa division, CSP Stephen Abolarin, moved to the scene and effected the arrest of Lawrence Itape. The knife was recovered and the corpse was deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary, Yaba for autopsy and reservation.

“The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Yaba, Lagos for discreet investigation “.

25 Months Unpaid Salary Arrears For Abia Doctors Display Of Executive Insensitivity — Udensi — Sir Chikwe Udensi

A chieftain of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Abia state, Sir Chikwe Udensi has condemned non-payment of salary arrears to doctors in Abia state under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA saying it is a display of insensitivity by the PDP-led administration in the state.

Responding to a threat by NMA members in the state to shut down all medical services if their backlog of salaries are not paid before December 8 during his appearance of Love FM’s Open Parliament in Umuahia monitored by ABN TV, Sir Udensi a governorship aspirant in Abia appealed to the government to take appropriate measures to avert another round of strike by doctors.

According to him, over 4000 pensioners in the state have lost their lives in conditions related to hunger and lack of medical care, saying a strike by the doctors will worsen the situation.

He stated that adequate medical attention for aging persons is a necessity, which he said is lacking in the state because of inability of the government to carry out its obligations to pensioners and the doctors themselves.

Sir Udensi also decried the effects of non-payment of salaries to doctors on their families, calling on Abia government to display concern.

He also called on the wife of the Abia State Governor, to speak up and advise the governor to be more proactive in the discharge of his duty regarding the payment of salaries and pensions.

He described as wicked and evil the alleged refusal of the government to pay doctors for about 25 months.

He insisted that someone must be held accountable in government to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to enrich themselves at the expense of the masses.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed the commitment of Nigeria to work with Guinea Bissau and other countries towards sustaining and strengthening democracy and good governance both in the sub-region and on the continent.

Buhari gave the affirmation during a one-day State Visit to the West African country today.

In a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Garba Shehu, the President, who used the opportunity to review bilateral relations of both countries and challenges facing the region, lauded the citizens for standing with President Umaro Embaló democratic government.

The President further expressed appreciation for the conferment of the country’s highest national honour, the Amilcar Cabral Award as well as the naming of a major street in Bissau, the capital city, after him.

The wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Senator Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday said the Muslim/Muslim ticket will set a new tone in the Nigerian political landscape in 2023.

Making a reference to the controversy over the Muslim-Muslim pairing in APC, the wife of the presidential hopeful said Nigeria might witness a Christian-Christian ticket in the future.

She made the prediction during the APC South West Women presidential rally at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

“As regards the Muslim/Muslim ticket, this one will set the tone for the future. Sometime in the future, we will have a Christian/Christian ticket. What God has done is marvelous in our land,” she said.

She also extended the greetings of the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari who was billed to attend the event but was absent at the rally.

“We thank you for coming out in large numbers despite the challenges. My coming here is another homecoming. About 23 years ago, God bless my husband to become the governor, I supported him as the first lady.”

Mrs. Tinubu, who described the rally as a homecoming for her, said, “I want to thank the people of Lagos Central for sending me to represent them. I’m the first woman to emerge as a senator three times. This is a wonderful opportunity. Since 2007 when my husband left office, I kept working for the good of our people.

“God rewards good work, what is happening to us is God that is doing this. He pleases people without people paying attention but heaven pays attention.”

The first lady of Lagos, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu said Nigeria needed somebody with Tinubu’s political sagacity to manage the affairs of the nation in 2023.

She stated that the forthcoming election would be an avenue to foster the much-desired gender balance.

We Have No Interest In Who Becomes Nigeria’s President In 2023 – UK — Catriona Liang

The United Kingdom (UK) government says it has no interest in who will become the next president of Nigeria during the forthcoming general elections.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by Catriona Liang, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, following a meeting, held at a closed door, with the National Working Committee, NWC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja.

Mrs Liang said the UK would work with any candidates who emerge from the election.

The High Commissioner also expressed confidence in Nigeria’s democracy and the president’s commitment to organising free and secure elections.

She said: “The UK doesn’t have a preferred candidate. We are committed to free and fair elections, but we will work with whoever the presidential candidate emerges from the election.

“The UK and Nigeria have a very strong partnership, and we want Nigeria to succeed. And democracy is part of it”.

She further added that her country’s government welcomes Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and as well the president Buhari’s commitment to free and secure elections.

After weeks of court proceedings, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Yobe North, Bashir Machina has described his recent victory at the Court of Appeal in Abuja as divine.

2023 Election: Senate President Cautions Against Vote-Trading — Senate President Ahmad Lawan

Senators have expressed reservations over the new policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on cash withdrawals.

The apex bank, under the new withdrawal policy, restricted the maximum cash withdrawal over the counter (OTC) by individuals and corporate organisations per week to N100,000 and N500,000 respectively.

The Senate Minority Leader Phillip Aduda (PDP, FCT) had, during Wednesday’s plenary called the attention of his colleagues to the new policy while seconding a motion that the nominations of Mrs Aishah Ahmad and Mr Edward Lametek Adamu as deputy governors of CBN be referred to the committee for screening.

Aduda called for caution on the cash withdrawal limit, saying the policy would affect the country’s economy.

He said, “Our commerce, I think, is not is not ready for this and our economy cannot take this shock.

“There is a need for us to speak about it because people are suffering and it is a very serious issue.”

Senator Gabriel Suswam (PDP, Benue) also urged the Senate to debate the policy immediately for the sake of Nigerians, whom, he said, were extremely worried.

Suswam said, “My phone was inundated by calls from constituents, who are outside the former sector. People are extremely worried. You should have allowed us to discuss this issue for the sake of Nigerians.”

Responding, Senate President Ahmad Lawan cautioned the CBN not to approach the policy by jumping into it at once, saying many Nigerians would be affected.

He further noted that there was the need to engage the CBN to get more details on the policy.

He therefore directed the Senate committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions to discuss the matter during the screening of the CBN deputy governors.

Lawan said the new CBN policy would be thoroughly debated next Tuesday.

He said, “At the moment, I will advise that these two deputy governors had been in the CBN for the past four years. So they are part of this system. They are not new people.

“This should be part of the major issues to be raised when they appear for screening.

“I want us to be properly informed and guided. Most of us, if not all of us have not had an engagement with that institution.

“My personal opinion is, if we want to be a cashless society, we should take time to be cashless society and not to jump on it at once. Most Nigerians will be out of business.

“But we need to take the opportunity of the screening to be better informed on the policy.”
