22-Year-Old Man Arrested In Enugu For Allegedly Killing, Stealing Sugar Mummy’s Car

Police have arrested and prosecuted 22-year-old suspect, Chidubem Osuagwu, for allegedly murdering and stealing the car of his “sugar mummy” (older lover), one Amarachi Chukwu (32), in Enugu.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

Ndukwe said that police detectives serving in the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Enugu, working with police operatives in Imo Command, on Nov. 8 arrested Osuagwu within Nekede axis of Owerri in Imo.

According to him, he was attempting to sell a Toyota Corolla car he stole from his older female lover, Chukwu, after murdering her on Nov. 1 in her residence at Meniru, Awkunanaw within Enugu metropolis.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect and his cohort at large, had in the morning hours of the mentioned date, conspired and went to the house of the victim, attempted to make away with her Toyota Corolla key, which she resisted.

“And upon her resistance, they tied her hands, legs and mouth with clothes; locked her inside the house and made away with the car.

“Her decomposing remains were, however, found in the said apartment on Nov. 4, after the door was forced opened by police operatives serving in Ikirike Police Division of the Command, following receipt of a report that an offensive odour was oozing out of the apartment.

“The police operatives evacuated the remains to the hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead and the corpse deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” he said.

The police spokesman said that the suspect had been arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigation and had been remanded in Enugu Custodial Centre pending further hearing of the case.

A Russian court in Moscow sentenced President Vladimir Putin’s critic, Ilya Yashin to eight years and six months imprisonment on Friday.

Russian accused Yashin of a criminal offence due to his statements about the killings in Bucha, a Ukrainian city.

CNN reported that Yashin slammed the “authors” of the “hysterical verdict” in a post on his official Telegram account.

“The authors of the verdict are optimistic about Putin’s prospects. In my opinion, they are too optimistic,” Yashin said.

The 39-year-old Putin’s staunch critic said he was punished for speaking the truth about war crimes.

“But we also have no reason to be sad, because we have won this trial, friends. The process started as a denunciation of me as a “people’s doctor,” but turned into an anti-war tribune.

“We spoke the truth about war crimes and called for an end to the bloodshed. And in response, they heard a hodgepodge of slogans from the Cold War, which was confusedly voiced by the prosecutor,” Yashin continued.

“With this hysterical verdict, the government wants to intimidate us all, but in fact, it only shows its weakness.

“Strong leaders are calm and self-confident, and only weaklings seek to shut everyone up, burn out any dissent. So today it only remains for me to repeat what was said on the day of my arrest: I am not afraid, and you should not be,” he added.

US Currency To Bear Signatures Of Two Women For First Time

Most people don’t have to worry if their signature is sloppy — but if it’s your name on the US dollar bill, it’s best to practice, says US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

“It’s customary that Treasury secretaries provide their signature to be featured on our nation’s currency,” said Yellen, the first woman to hold the office, at a ceremony unveiling new notes bearing her name.

“You’d think this would be a straightforward process, but the founding fathers did not account for what seems to be a common attribute for Treasury secretaries: terrible handwriting.”

Yellen had previously remarked in a TV interview that two of her predecessors, Tim Geithner and Jack Lew, had signatures “so illegible that people made fun of them.”

Geithner “famously had to change his signature in order to make it legible,” she joked Thursday.

“I’ll admit: I spent some quality time practicing my signature,” she added.

In addition to the first female Treasury secretary’s name appearing on them, the new notes unveiled Thursday will also be historic for including two women’s signatures: that of Yellen and US Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

“Today is not about me or a new signature on our currency. It’s about our collective work to create a stronger and more inclusive economy,” Yellen said in a speech at the Fort Worth, Texas money printing facility.

The notes are set for delivery to the US Federal Reserve this month and will be in circulation starting in early 2023, according to the Treasury Department.

Currently, women represent about 62 percent of the Treasury workforce and hold positions of power, she said.

But much more still needs to be done, Yellen added.

“I hope that today is a reminder of the road we’ve traveled on equity and inclusion. And I hope it motivates us to continue to move forward,” she said.

Malerba’s signature also marks the first time US currency will feature the signature of a Native American woman.

“This moment is history,” said Malerba.

The first notes bearing Yellen and Malerba’s signature coming into circulation will be $1 and $5 bills.

Apart from the site in Texas, the only other greenback printing facility is in the US capital Washington.

Achievers University Produces 30 First Class Graduates

No fewer than 30 students of the Achievers University in Owo, Ondo State, would be graduating from the university with first class out of the 467 graduating students.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Samuel Aje, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the 12th convocation ceremony of the university.

According to the vice chancellor, who gave the breakdown of the graduating students, “out of the 467 graduating students, 30 bagged first class, while 242 will be awarded second class upper, 152 got second class lower and 19 graduated with third class honours.”

He added, “On December 8, 2022, we shall be presenting 96 graduates of Medical Laboratory Science to Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria for registration as medical laboratory scientists. This will be our ninth induction ceremony.

“We shall equally be presenting 114 graduate nurses to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for induction as registered nurses and registered midwives.”

Aje also stated that the governing council of the institution had granted 50 per cent tuition scholarship for UTME and direct entry candidates in engineering programmes.

“A total number of 893 students have benefitted from this tuition free arrangement since inception in 2021. Our gratitude equally goes to the governing council for granting 50 per cent tuition scholarship for UTME and Direct Entry candidates in engineering programmes,” he disclosed.

The don also disclosed that the plan was on top gear towards establishing a College of Aviation, with an airstrip within the university following the accreditation of programmes by the National Universities Commission.

The move according to him, would position the institution as the only university in West Africa to embark on such a programme.

However, Prof. Aje frowned at the mass exodus of Nigerian youths to foreign countries under the ‘japa’ syndrome, saying the situation was disturbing and something must be done about it.

“Many of them leave Nigeria to go to uncertified and unrecognised institutions and they come back with certificates which cannot be authenticated. Some of them cannot even go for the National Youth Service Corps,” he added.

Court Sends Uche Ogah To Prison, Ex-Minister Reacts

The crisis rocking the Abia State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC has taken a different twist as a State Magistrate Court sitting in Umuahia on Thursday convicted the governorship candidate of the party and immediate past Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uche Ogah, for forgery, and ordered his arrest and committal to prison at any nearest Correctional Centre in the state.

Ogah through his lawyer, Barr. Chijioke Udeogu while reacting to the decision of the court described it as a kangaroo trial which underlines the desperation of a factional governorship candidate of the party, Ikechi Emenike and his cohorts.

Barr. Udeogu said there was no proper trial and investigation of the alleged forgery of the party’s direct primary election result sheet.

A federal high court sitting in Abuja had last month declared Ogah the authentic governorship candidate of the party in Abia, a judgement Chief Ikechi Emenike said was obtained through deceit and fraud.

Both are laying claims to the party’s governorship candidate having emerged through parallel primaries.

While Ogah emerged through a direct primary as directed by the party’s national leadership, Emenike emerged through an indirect primary.

The Federal High Court has however laid the argument to rest by validating the candidacy of Ogah.

Emenike had approached a state magistrate court in Umuahia alleging forgery, for which Ogah was on Thursday convicted and committed to prison.

Barr. Udeogu faulted the trial in a chat with ABN TV and queried why Ogah was not tried by the police for the alleged criminal offence, saying such processes should be filed by the police or other security agencies and not a man he said has been randomly defeated politically.

“Ikechi Emenike is a sinking man desperately looking for what to hold unto. This is a criminal case and it is the enforcement agency that ought to bring the case before the magistrate. There is no case against Uche Ogah brought to his notice by the police,” he said.

Pope Weeps Praying For Ukraine

Pope Francis broke down and cried as he mentioned the travails of Ukrainians during a traditional prayer in central Rome on Thursday.

The traditional prayer took place at Madonna, at the foot of a statue on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, during a national holiday in Italy.

Reuters reported that the pope’s voice started trembling as he mentioned the Ukrainians and he had to stop.

The head of the Catholic Church, then, could not speak for about 30 seconds, and his voice was cracking when he resumed the prayer.

Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri who was right next to the pope, applauded when he realised he was unable to talk and saw him crying. The crowd followed suit in clapping the pope’s emotional moment.

“Immaculate Virgin, today I would have wanted to bring you the thanks of the Ukrainian people…” Pope said before being overwhelmed by emotion.

Having composed himself, he continued, “Instead, once again I have to bring you the pleas of children, of the elderly, of fathers and mothers, of the young people of that martyred land, which is suffering so much.”

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Francis has mentioned Ukraine in almost all his public appearances and has heavily criticised Vladimir Putin and his security forces for starting the war.

On Wednesday, he compared the war in Ukraine to a Nazi operation that killed some two million people, mostly Jews, in the first years of World War II.

After reading the prayer on Thursday at the statue near the Spanish Steps, the pope greeted people in the crowd, including journalists.

When one of the reporters mentioned how he was overcome with emotion, he responded, “Yes. It (the war in Ukraine) is an enormous suffering, enormous. A defeat for humanity.”

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue, says the issue of banditry and other forms of insecurity in the state will become a thing of the past if he takes charge of security forces deployed by the federal government.

Benue, among several states of the country, has become a hotbed of violent attacks, killings, and abductions by gunmen.

On August 4, the governor set up a security outfit as part of efforts to address insecurity in the state.

He had also expressed his intention to procure sophisticated weapons to arm the volunteer guards, but the defence headquarters had kicked against the move.

Speaking on Thursday when he paid a visit to Ekpe Ogbu, the commissioner for housing and urban development, who was recently kidnapped, Ortom said the federal government is not doing enough to end banditry.

“Others who are in government today can pretend about this, but the government is complicit at the federal level. They are part of it. Whatever they are saying now is pretence. They are telling lies and they do not want to give attention to the insecurity situation,” he said.

“If the federal government, whose responsibility is to provide security for lives and property and who have the coercive forces of the security architecture of the country, decides that terrorism, kidnappings, and evil should end today, it will end.

“If the federal government is in doubt, let them make an executive order, just like the president makes executive orders in other areas, and give me the responsibility to look after the coercive forces that are in Benue state.

“Tell them to take instructions from me. We will end the evil, armed robbery, banditry, and everything; we will end it today in Benue state.

“We are not going to relent on this war and there is no way we will compromise and allow kidnappers to have their way in this state.

“I challenge our people to rise up and not to allow kidnappers in their communities. When you suspect them, don’t hesitate to involve the security agencies so that they will not come back again.

“There is no way we can add value to the development of our state when we have kidnappers all over the place terrorizing our communities.

“There is no way foreigners will come here and invest in our state with challenges like this. There is no way we can do everything on our own and make things work. So, we must stop this.”

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, on Friday, warned Nigerians against choosing the wrong president in 2023.

Primate Ayodele warned that Nigerians would buy imported rice for N80,000 and local rice between N30,000-N40,000 if they choose the wrong president among the three frontrunners.

He explained that things would worsen, and Nigerians couldn’t afford to choose a candidate without seeking God’s direction.

In a statement by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele urged the citizens to go on their knees to ask God for the best choice because consulting with humans will only lead to failure.

According to Ayodele: “Nigerians will buy imported rice for N80,000 if we vote for the wrong candidate, local rice will be 30,000, Diesel will sell for N1500. If we vote for the wrong one, one of the three candidates is wrong for Nigeria, we need to be on alert.

“Nigerians must go on their knees to pray to God for the best choice for Nigeria in 2023. It is not by noise. We need a divine person that God will choose for us; human consultation will fail us in 2023. Human consultation will only lead us to worse situations. We need divine intervention. The best for us may not be the best for God; let God have his way in 2023.”
