Oby Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Education, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, says there is no way she will leave the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and vote for the other top two candidates in the 2023 presidential race.

She said the top three candidates can easily be rated with publicly available information and having done her ratings, the Labour Party candidate is ahead of other contestants.

“To the specific issue of a presidential candidacy, what I said and which I repeat everywhere that I am asked is that I look at the other two candidates and I rate them immediately on the basis of what we know, and for the three candidates there is publicly available information with which to do the rating.

“So after I have done my rating, there is absolutely no way I would leave a Peter Obi and vote for any of the other two candidates,” Ezekwesili said on Channels Television Hard Copy programme.
.
The former World Bank Vice President for Africa Region noted that an analytical perspective of what is likely to happen in 2023 suggests that a strong appetite for change is coming from the youthful segment of the population which makes up to 60 per cent of the voting population and many of whom are leaning towards Obi’s presidency.

She also said that women which make up about 51 per cent of the voting population are more inclined towards the presidency of Peter Obi, adding that the former Anambra governor’s prospect cannot be dismissed taking into the perspective various zones of the country and the appetite they have for an inclusive approach to governance.

Ezekwesili pointed out the improved activeness of the electorate as one of the things that will excite people who have gotten into politics to effect change, adding that today’s electorate is not disengaged as they were in 2019 and before.

She noted that young people especially women are much more conscious as they are now tired of the failure of the government because the groundswell of interest today wasn’t there as of 2019.

Since leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier in the year to the Labour Party, Obi has emerged as a top challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the candidate of the former ruling party PDP, Atiku Abubakar, in the race to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2923.

Abia North 2023: We Won't Participate In Unreliable Opinion Polls — Orji Uzor Kalu Campaign Organization

The Orji Uzor Kalu Campaign Organization has urged voters in Abia North Senatorial District not to participate in unreliable online polls ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The campaign organization in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Sunny Idika on Saturday morning titled “Count Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Out Of Unreliable Opinion Polls“, said the Abia North Senator was confident of winning the 2023 Abia North senatorial election overwhelmingly.

The statement urged eligible voters to judge candidates based on performance, track record, capacity, and competency, noting that “Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s scorecard so far has shown ability and dexterity in law-making, legislative advocacy, and proficiency in building bi-partisan alliances”.

“The Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu’s portrait of legislative excellence has left no one in doubt on his parliamentary capabilities and expertise. We are excited and impressed by the compliments, accolades, and feedback from stakeholders and people of Abia North Senatorial District and their common consensus of re-electing him in 2023.

“Even though we are winning with a wide margin in one of their unreliable polls from result shown so far, it is the electorate, who will determine the fate of candidates of political parties at the polls physically when the time comes and not unreliable online polls promoted by politicians without achievements to campaign with.

“We sympathise with those without scorecards, especially the candidate that has been dazed by the outcome of the 2019 polls. This candidate, lately, has been working very hard to deceive the public that it has turned a new leaf following its removal in 2019, but we know that a leopard will never change its skin— and we won’t participate in any unreliable online polls with him and others,” the statement said.

Ohanaeze, Yoruba Youth Council Back CBN’s Withdrawal Limit Policy

Banks Will Keep Accepting Old Naira Notes After Deadline – Godwin Emefiele

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide and the Yoruba Youth council have thrown their weight behind the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new cash policies.

The CBN last week announced a cash withdrawal limit policy, which has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians.

However, the youth councils in a separate statement by the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, and his Yoruba counterpart, Comrade Eric Oluwole said the youths were in support of the decision of the apex bank.

The youth council leadership berated members of the National Assembly for kicking against the policy, adding that corruption was fighting back.

Onabuike said: “At a time the economy is bleeding, Nigerians should support any measure aimed at stabilizing the Naira. The cash withdrawal limit is an effective monetary policy.

We the Igbo youths are firmly in support of the policy as it would aid in fighting corruption which has been entrenched in the Nigeria system. We also have no doubt that it will help in the stabilisation of the exchange rate and reduce inflation.

“Besides, it is also a bad market for all vote buyers. As Nigerians prepare for the 2023 election, all those who have stashed money waiting to buy voters must be living in regrets now.’

Okwu, while noting that there were other far-reaching benefits “that would help secure the future of our children and our youths”, urged the National Assembly to stop further opposition to the policies, streaming that on the long run, the masses would reap the benefits.

For Oluwole on behalf of the Yoruba Youth Council, said that the redesign will accelerate Nigeria’s migration into a cashless economy as happening in many countries across the globe.

He said the advantages of the policy include effective monetary policy: fighting corruption: and helping in the stabilisation of the galloping exchange rate.

Besides, Oluwole said that the cashless policy and redesigning will help to drastically reduce inflation, and engender free and fair elections “among other benefits that are far reaching that will help secure the future of our children and our youths.”

He urged the CBN to orientate Nigerians about this development, adding that the people need to know the advantages of the policy in order not to cause confusion.

“The cashless policy being fully implemented by CBN is not new, as required steps in that direction, were taken in 2012 with Lagos State as a pilot scheme and Abuja and some other six states in 2013” he said.

“The cashless policy will drive development and modernization of our payment system in line with Nigeria and it is an efficient and modern payment system is positively correlated with economic development, and is a key enabler for economic growth.
To reduce the cost of banking services (including cost of credit) and drive financial inclusion by providing more efficient transaction options and greater reach. To improve the effectiveness of monetary policy in managing inflation and driving economic growth.

He corroborated CBN Governor’s position that high cash usage results in a lot of money outside the formal economy, thus limiting the effectiveness of monetary policy in managing inflation and encouraging economic growth. Inefficiency and corruption, high cash usage enables corruption, leakages and money laundering, amongst other cash-related fraudulent activities.

He further stated that the redesign was to check currency fraud; deal a fatal blow to the growing worrisome kidnapping and ransom industry: reduce inflation and control the amount of money in circulation.

“I came in as an ordinary engineer. Now, my colleagues and I are going out with doctorate degrees. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate the graduates of today and yesterday. Today is majorly for PhD graduates. What you have is the peak of academic qualification.

“So, for most of you it’s a journey to taking a very big leap because some of you are not going to come back to school, you will join us in the real world. Because in the controlled environment here, you can basically predict how things will go but when you come out there, it is a different ballgame.

“You should be ready to take on further responsibilities. Whatever your plans are. This university has done its part to give you the necessary academic and moral training. So as you leave, you will always remember where you’re coming from.

“Let me say that this university has contributed immensely to the development of our state. The chairman of the road maintenance agency is an alumnus of this university. Before he came on board, they were abusing me that we weren’t paying attention to the inner roads. Since he came, the abuse has stopped,” he said.

Meanwhile, the university also awarded various categories of graduands of the institution including 1,547 graduates who bagged bachelors of science degrees, 583 who bagged postgraduate degrees, and 34 who bagged doctorate degrees.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Timothy Adebayo, also noted that 41 undergraduate students graduated with first-class honours.

He urged the graduates to be totally self-reliant and not to stop learning as knowledge is a continuous adventure.

“From this moment, begin to practicalise the knowledge that you have acquired in Ajayi Crowther University, through constant learning and self-development. Albert Einstein, the celebrated German Physicist, once said that, ‘education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.’

“We, therefore, charge you to keep updating and upgrading yourselves to meet up with the completions and opportunities in our ever-changing world. We recognize the fact that you have made significant contributions to global scholarships,” he said.

He also announced that the school has gotten approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run a nursing degree programme, adding that it is a step forward towards having more courses on offer in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, which will, in no distant time, midwife the birth of the College of Medicine.

Court Declares Akande-Sadipe APC Reps Candidate For Oluyole

Court Declares Akande-Sadipe APC Reps Candidate For Oluyole
Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday, dismissed a case filed by Hon. Olugbemi Sunbo, against the victory of Rep Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, who emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Oluyole Federal Constituency in May 2022.

Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe won the ticket of the party on 27th May, 2022.

On the 22nd of June, an action was filed by Olugbemi, asking the Presiding Judge, Hon. Justice Uche Nma Agomoh to invalidate the Primaries that declared Tolulope Akande-Sadipe as the winner.

On Friday, December 9th, 2022, the court held that Akande-Sadipe, who represents the constituency, remains the rightful candidate of the APC in Oluyole Federal Constituency.

The suit, Samson OLUSUMBO Olugbemi vs APC & 2 others with Suit no. FHC/IB/CS/109/2022 was dismissed on the grounds that there was no evidence that he won the primaries.

“No evidence of any malpractice in the primary election was established by the plaintiff,” the counsel to Akande-Sadipe and APC, Olawole Abiola and Adeola Adedipe said.

The court inferred that the case was held to be statute barred having been filed over 14 days after the cause of action occurred, which is the APC primary election of 27th of May, 2022 contrary to the provision of the constitution that provides that any action challenging primary election must be filed within 14days of the primary.

The court upheld that the plaintiff does not qualify as an aspirant under the electoral act 2022 having not asserted that he participated in the primary.

Hence, the court ruled that there were no grounds put before it, to nullify the ticket of the party in the custody of Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, having fulfilled all the provisions of the law and complied with stipulated guidelines.

Speaking further, the Counsels said the Presiding Judge struck out the case filed by the appellant, Olasunbo Olugbemi saying it does not have jurisdiction to entertain the plaintiff’s action “because the plaintiff claimed that there was no primary election”.

“The court is only empowered under section 285(14) of the constitution to examine the absence of due process in the conduct of primaries of a political party. However, the plaintiff said there was no primary election. The court rightly declined jurisdiction”.

“The federal high court Ibadan is not the proper forum to commence the action because by the FHC Practice Direction on Pre Elections, 2022. An action must be commenced at Federal high court Abuja where the plaintiff complains against the decision of INEC and APC whose headquarters are both in Abuja”, the counsels said.

Accordingly, the court declared Akande-Sadipe as the validly nominated and authentic candidate of the APC for the Oluyole Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat February 2023 election.

Nigeria Needs A Deliverer Not A Leader — Oyedepo

0

The President of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo has said the country needs a deliverer that will rescue the nation from the insecurity and economic collapse. Oyedepo who spoke at the Shiloh 2022 themed: Covenant Highways, at the church’s headquarters in Ota, Ogun State recalled how he warned Nigerians in 2015 that the country was heading for trauma.

He said: “I warned this nation in 2015 that you are bargaining for trauma without knowing, but nobody listened, now the only thing that Nigeria is known for despite insecurity and economic collapse is the church.” He said Nigeria needed a deliverer and not a leader. “I am not a politician and would never be one. I have left that realm a long time ago but this land must have rest.

Oyedepo urged his members to pray to God to send Nigeria a deliverer so people could have a rest of mind. “If you love Nigeria, you better pray that God should send us a deliverer and give us rest again. We are long overdue for rest. He (God) sent them a deliverer in Israel and the land had rest for 80 years. We have a big conference going on in Redemption Camp. It’s the Church that is giving Nigeria a face of honour.

“We (the Churches) are at peace and they are at war but we want the wellbeing of every mortal man in the country. And as the Lord lives, as we pray, the deliverer will emerge. There shall be no war in Nigeria, there shall be no bloodshed in Nigeria. Nigeria shall prosper again and the shame of this nation will be rolled away. And the perpetrators will pay for it. You cannot kill other people’s children and have your children alive.

“It’s not size that makes a Prophet, it’s an election of grace. God will work wonders in Nigeria and this revival will bring about change in Nigeria. Say to the wicked, it shall not be well with thee, every sponsor of unrest in Nigeria, it shall not be well with them. It’s takes spiritual madness to pray for robbers, after they come to your house, saying God have mercy on them.”
