2023: ADC Not Merging With Any Party – National chairman

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prof. Ralph Nwosu, has dispelled the rumour that the Ogun State chapter of the party is planning a merger with another political party ahead of the 2023 election.

Abeokuta Federal High Court had ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expunge the names of ADC candidates from its list for failing to comply with the Electoral Act in the conduct of their primary elections.

The Labour Party (LP) had dragged ADC, its governorship candidate, Biyi Otegbeye, and the 26 House of Assembly candidates of the party to court.

Ruling, Justice Akintayo Aluko nullified all the primary elections of ADC, saying the primary elections were not monitored by INEC.

Since the judgment was delivered, there have been speculations that the party might merge with another party in order to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

But while addressing newsmen at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta on Monday, Nwosu insisted that the party is not considering a merger with any party, stressing that Otegbeye and others would be on the ballot.

His words: “We have been inundated with calls and reports from some quarters that the ADC has opted to work with another political party in the state for the coming elections; that the party no longer has candidates. This is false in its entirety and we use this medium to state that all our candidates remain as they are.

“We have no pact or working relationship with any other political party. We are going to contest the election and fix Ogun State back. No political party should ride on our temporary challenge to hoodwink our members or lie to the public that ADC has joined them.”

Nwosu stated that the ADC is formidable to provide a credible alternative to the “clueless” APC.

He accused the APC of using the court to get other strong opposition parties disqualified from contesting.

“If you have performed and served meritoriously, you will fear no opposition, but in the current circumstance, the APC is fearful of the reward of its own incompetence and failure,” he said.

Speaking further, Nwosu described the court judgement disqualifying ADC candidates as a temporary setback, revealing that the judgment has been appealed.

He expressed optimism that the “appeal court will do justice to our democracy.”

He said: “We approached the Court of Appeal knowing that they will further amplify the beauty of the democratic process and bring credibility to our democratic journey as a nation.”

Ahead of the forthcoming presidential election, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Osita Okechukwu, has said his party is only worried about Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, and not about Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Okechukwu also said Bola Tinubu, APC’s presidential candidate, has come a long way and knows the country very well to win the 2023 presidential election, among other candidates.

The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria disclosed this on Monday morning while featuring on the Arise Television Morning Show programme.

He said Atiku had lost his base and that he could not harvest Buhari’s 12 million votes.

“As per Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, what nobody can deny is that he knows the onion. He knows the gravitas, he knows the country, and he has come a long way. And we are not bothered about PDP; for instance, Atiku has lost his base.

“We are more bothered about Peter Obi and others. Kwankwaso, we know he is qualified and highly capable, but he is riding against the zoning convention. And so, if you tell us about Peter Obi, then we can say, ok, that is where we are worried, but not about Atiku, who has lost his base.

“Atiku cannot win; I challenge those who are saying so. He cannot harvest Buhari’s 12 million votes; he cannot. He does not have Buhari’s vote bank,” he said.

The Abia State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday vowed that it will resist blackmail and evil machinations of disgruntled party chieftains and ensure the election of the immediate past Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uche Ogah as the next governor of the state in 2023 gubernatorial election.

This is coming against the backdrops of a purported court judgement that jailed Ogah on allegation of forgery, disinformation allegedly peddled by members of a parallel state structure of the party loyal to an ex-Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu state, Mr Ikechi Emenike, a factional governorship candidate in the state.

In a statement on Sunday by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Offor Okorie, Abia APC insisted that the reported conviction of Uche Ogah by an Umuahia magistrate court cannot stand the test of time.

According to Okorie: “The conviction is in total error and cannot stand judicial test. Ogah is hunted for truth and truths must always prevail. Even law enforcement agents know the truth, and truth must prevail against all darkness. Ogah is innocent.”

Continuing, Okorie reaffirmed the party’s earlier position and support on the direct gubernatorial primary election which produced Ogah as the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate in Abia State as monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission across the electoral wards of the 17 local government areas in the state.

“On direct primaries, we stand. INEC monitored the direct primaries done in all the electoral wards of Abia State. Where did the forgery come from, if Ikechi Emenike and co think Dr Uche Ogah did not win the direct primaries as approved by the national working committee of the APC?

“Saying that he forged the primary election results, Ikechi Emenike should have tendered it in the federal high court Abuja that invalidated his candidacy or better approach the court of appeal to prove the forgery case against Uche Ogah, rather than bring himself so low to approach the magistrate court that does not have jurisdiction over the case.”

The factional group reportedly claimed the forgery allegedly perpetrated by the ex-minister was prejudicial to them and their authentic governorship flag-bearer, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, and therefore amounted to an offence contrary to Section 465 of the Criminal Code as is applicable in Abia State.

Recall before now that a federal high court presided by Justice Binta-Murtala Nyako in Abuja had sacked Emenike and affirmed the former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah as the authentic All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate in Abia State for the election in 2023.

The court held that the indirect primary election, which produced Emenike, was in total disobedience to a letter forwarded by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it would adopt a direct mode of the primary election in the state.

The high court also held that the direct primary election of 26th and 27th May 2022, which produced Ogah, was valid as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Abia State endorsed it.

How I Will Resolve IPOB Agitations, Tackle Insecurity – Atiku Abubakar

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed how he will deal with the agitations by separatists, including the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, and tackle the nation’s security challenges if elected.

Abubakar made this known on Sunday during People’s Townhall, a brainchild of Channels Television and its partners.

He said: “The IPOB issue in the South East is basically, as far as my understanding is concerned, about the realization of Biafra.

“Is it possible for Biafra to be realized today?

“How?

“By negotiations or by going through another civil war, which we can’t afford to?

“I believe we should be able to negotiate with the agitators from the South East as far as the issue of Biafra is concerned.

“We believe what they need is more autonomy as far as their sub-region is concerned.

“That is why we proposed restructuring of the country, by which we mean devolution of more powers and resources.

“After all, there was Eastern Nigeria in the First Republic and they developed at their own pace and with their own resources.

“The agitations are in different perspectives, to my understanding.

“One of them is political and political has the sense of: ‘How does the South East participate in power sharing in the country?’

“And we are in a democratic society.

“There is no one single geopolitical zone in this country that on its own can achieve political power without crossing the Niger or being in alliance with other geopolitical zones.

“I think this is what they should begin to think: How do they partner with other parts of the country to secure political power for their own interests or to protect their own interests?

“I think these are the ways to go as far as agitations by IPOB are concerned.”

On insecurity in the country, Abubakar said he may adopt the security system being used in the United Arab Emirates.

He said: “The security architecture I admire is the UAE security architecture and it’s primarily based on the monitoring.

“You don’t see policemen in uniform in UAE, you don’t see soldiers but virtually everybody is being monitored on a daily basis and particularly if you are a visitor, from the moment you step into the country or go out, anywhere you are going you are being watched and that is the deployment of technology as far as security is concerned.

“That is to say we are aiming for the ultimate, but we have to deal with our current security structure.

“How we reform it to ensure that we give our people a more secure environment to undertake their own legitimate businesses wherever they may be, whether in the rural areas, semi-urban and so on.”

The Middle Belt Forum has said it remains committed to the ambition of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 elections in Nigeria, Peter Obi.

The President of the MBF, Bitrus Pogu, reaffirmed the position in Enugu on Sunday at the 70th birthday of Nnia Nwodo.

Chief Nwodo is the immediate past President General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and a former Minister of Information.

Pogu said the North Central had no better option than Obi, adding that the MBF remains committed to supporting a president of South East extraction for the purpose of fairness, equity and justice.

He said in a keynote address in which he praised Nwodo over his role in the emergence of Obi as presidential candidate from the South East: “We have said it again and again that in the interest of equity, fairness, and justice, the president should come from the south, particularly the South East.

“In the Middle Belt, we are with Obi for a better Nigeria.

“When Obi emerges, Nwodo will stand by him as one of the persons who played a major role in presenting him to us.”

Among those who attended the ceremony were Obi; former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as the Chairman; and leader of the apex Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

Motorists along the 30km Arochukwu Road will soon heave a sigh of relief as the APC candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia state, High Chief Dan Okeke has sponsored the grading/rehabilitation of the state road.

The project is to commences from Umuye Ihechiowa to St. Paul’s Junction Ututu.

This follows the outcry of people from Ihechiowa Ututu and Arochukwu respectively over the depleting condition of the major road leading into their communities, Oti Maduabuchi Orieji, the Special Adviser to Chief Okeke said in a statement.

The road rehabilitation he said is a demonstration of Chief Daniel Okeke’s commitment in making lives better and easier for the people of Ohafia/Arochukwu communities as well as all Abians and users of the road.

The statement said, “The road users have expressed unreserved joy over the latest developments one of the Road transport Worker who identified himself as Mr Kalu in his remarks expressed his joy and love for Chief Daniel Okeke describing as a man extraordinary achievements and charitable spirit, he further expressed his confidence that Chief Daniel Okeke will bring reasonable development if voted into power.

“No doubt this project is one of the biggest projects that will go a long way to make life and movement easier during this festive period, it will not only be an answered prayer and a big relief for people from these communities but will also boost their economy which is one of the agenda of Chief Daniel Okeke as concerned with the economy of his constituency since they are the major roads through which goods and services are conveyed into and out of these communities.

Four Killed As Gunmen Attack Imo State INEC Headquarters

At least four persons have been neutralised following an early morning attack on Monday on the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Imo State.

The State police public relations officer, Michael Abattam confirmed this in interview with Channels TV monitored by ABN TV.

The gunmen threw grenades through the commission’s fence, destroying several offices and vehicles parked in the premises of the office located along Owerri Port Harcourt road

However, the police stationed at the INEC office engaged the gunmen in a heavy shootout , leaving three of the gunmen allegedly wearing charms and Biafra camouflages dead.

One policeman lost his life in the attack while another was injured.
