Senatorial Office Not Opportunity To Amass Wealth But Give Service — Orji Kalu
Senator Orji Uzor kalu

Senator representing Abia North and former governor of the state, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu has said the office of a federal lawmaker is not the opportunity to accumulate wealth but to serve the constituents.

He said Senators and House of Representatives members are the ear and eye of the people in every democratic setting who ensures that dividends of democracy trickle down to the people.

“After being a governor, I am no a Senator, my duty is to turn the senatorial district around and make it the envy of others. In US, senators do change the society and that is the only thing they do”, he told ABN TV on Tuesday.

He faulted the claim by some former lawmakers that a senator’s assignment is to make laws and not to attract projects.

The Senate Chief Whip said in America which is the model of Nigerian democracy, senators are meant to be very influential to be able to attract life-changing projects for the people.

This he said he does and will continue to do while also making laws that will directly impact on his people.

Sen. Kalu is reputed to have completed the renovation and rehabilitation of over 60 roads since his election into the Senate in 2019.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved that Nigerians returning home can be admitted into the country with their expired Nigerian passports.

This is contained in a letter from the Comptroller-General of Immigration Service (CGIS) Isah Jere Idris, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and dated 9th December 2022.

“Consequently, all Airlines are requested to allow holders of expired Nigerian passports to board without let or hindrance.

“In addition, all Nigerian Diplomatic Missions abroad are kindly requested to circulate this information to airlines operators and border authorities of host countries for their necessary action,” the letter said in part.

All Head of Missions, Immigration attachés, airports comptrollers and airlines were copied in the letter, with reference number NIS/CGI/FD/208/20 and signed by DCI BM Lawal – a Special Assistant to the Comtroller-General of Immigration Service (Foreign Desk).

The CGIS had recently directed the immediate setting up of diaspora desks in all International airports in order to have a seamless passport process for all Nigerians coming home this yuletide period who may be desirous of processing their passports.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Anthony Akuneme (DCI), added that the CGIS had directed passport offices across the country to give priority attention to such citizens living outside the country and their families bearing in mind that most of them have a specific time of returning to their countries of residence.

“The CGIS affirmed the commitment of the Service to continue rendering effective and efficient service delivery to all Nigerians both at home and abroad, as well as non-Nigerians who are desirous of using any of the service windows,” the statement added.

The fast-track passport process for this yuletide season commenced a few weeks ago with the opening of passport offices on Saturday.

The NIS said this group of people have until 31st January 2023 to enjoy this service.

Stop Negative Posts About EKSU On Social Media – VC Warns Students

The Vice-Chancellor, of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Professor Edward Olanipekun, has warned students fond of posting negative comments about the university on various social media platforms to desist from such acts henceforth.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the warning while addressing the newly matriculated students for the 2021/2022 academic session for the Postgraduate Regular, Sandwich, and Professional programmes held at the University’s main auditorium, Ado Ekiti.

Professor Olanipekun noted that there were various channels of communication where issues could be handled rather than exposing the university to unnecessary ridicule and therefore, advised students to explore such avenues.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the matriculants for scaling through the rigorous screening exercise of the postgraduate college and informed them that they all have reasons to be proud of Ekiti State University as a centre of academic excellence. He noted that the university had improved in its recent web metric ranking to be the 14th-best university in Nigeria and the 2nd-best state university across the nation.

He encouraged the matriculants to always visit the University library which he described as one of the best in the sub-Sahara region. The Vice-Chancellor explained further that the library is well equipped with both soft and hard copies of various versions of books not only for research but for in-depth knowledge in their academic pursuits.

Olanipekun further implored the matriculants to be good ambassadors of the institution and abide by all its rules and regulations, stressing that his administration has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct.

The University Registrar, Mr. Ife Oluwole, had earlier administered the matriculation oaths to the matriculants at the event.

Unregistered/expired aphrodisiacs and other pharmaceuticals were allegedly confiscated in Kaduna, according to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

During a Monday raid on 26 stores at the Sabon Gari market in Zaria LGA, the agency made the seizures.

Oxytocin and microgynon, which were intended to be given for free to IDPs, were among the products seized (injections for women delivered of babies, which required a specific temperature to be stored but were found in the open).

Addressing journalists after the raid, the NAFDAC deputy director in charge of investigation and enforcement in Kaduna, Tamanuwa Andrew, said, “The seized aphrodisiacs were found to contain up to 200 strength milligrams which were more than 100mg that the agency registered.”

Mr. Andrew explained that one of NAFDAC’s strategies to reduce or minimize the menace of substandard and falsified products was continuous mop-up from circulation.

Putin Cancels Annual Media Conference Amid War With Ukraine

Putin Open To Ukraine Talks, But Not With Zelensky

Kremlin has said Russian President Vladimir Putin will not hold the end-of-year media conference this year.

Al Jazeera reports that Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who disclosed this on Monday, also noted that President Putin “regularly speaks to the press, including on foreign visits”.

The spokesman did not give a reason for not holding the marathon conference, which usually lasts several hours.

However, observers viewed the move as a break with protocol due to Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began in February.

Vladimir Putin, who has been in power since 2000, has held a news conference in December most years of his rule – an event that he has used to gloss over his image on national TV.

The suspension of this year’s news conference marks the first time in a decade that Putin would not hold the December event, which is a rare opportunity for reporters outside the Kremlin, including international journalists, to ask the Russian president questions directly.

The war embarked on by Russian forces in Ukraine has become a global discourse, with the West seeing it as an act of aggression on the sovereignty of Ukraine, thus, meted out a series of economic sanctions on the invading Russia.

Qatar 2022: Argentina Star Di Maria Fit To Start Against Croatia - Argentina Head Coach

Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni has stated that Angel Di Maria is fit to start Tuesday’s (today) semi-final clash against Argentina.

Di Maria has struggled to stay fit this season missing key games for both club and country.

The winger suffered a muscle injury in a 2-0 win over Poland on November 30, missing a Round of 16 clashes with Australia four days later.

Di Maria however made his return in the quarter-final win against the Netherlands, coming off as a substitute in extra time.

“They are both fit and this leaves us calm,” Scaloni said at a press conference.

“They are both ok, we are going to asses them because the game can be very long and complicated, but surely, they are available to start.”

Di Maria joined Juventus as a free agent in the summer, signing a one-year deal.

He has only collected 391 minutes across 10 appearances at a club level this term, scoring one goal and delivering four assists.

2023: I Can’t Support Atiku, Lawal Vows

Babachir Lawal

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, on Monday insisted that he would not support the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 election.

According to him, Atiku’s ambition would not fly as it would amount to the transition of government from one Muslim Fulani President to another Muslim Fulani President.

Lawal was reacting to a report that he has abandoned the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to work for Atiku.

He warned that Atiku, having his way, would represent ethnic domination by one ethnic group over others, saying “I remain a Peter Obi diehard.”

The statement read in part, “I have just seen trending news that I have abandoned Peter Obi to work for Atiku Abubakar. There is nothing far from the truth as this. I have never contemplated joining the PDP since its formation as I view the PDP as the worst form of a collection of oligarchs and reactionaries.

“Besides, I find myself every year battling Fulani herdsmen determined to have their animals invade my farms and eat up my crops every year.

“This is aside from their determination to take over the ancestral farmlands of my kinsmen as they do everywhere in the North. All these they do in a cavalier manner while their elite kinsmen dominant in the government keep mute.

“Moreover, I view a transition of government from one Muslim Fulani President to another as the worst form of Muslim-Muslim ticket. It also represents ethnic domination by one ethnic group over others. I remain a Peter Obi diehard. Any news to the contrary is fake news.”

2023 Elections: Politicians Buying PVCs, Inducing Voters – INEC

PVC Collection: INEC Cautions Staff Against Sharp Practices

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accused some politicians of buying Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and financially inducing voters to harvest their Voter Identification Numbers (VIN).

The acting chairman of INEC and National Commissioner, overseeing the FCT, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Plateau states, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, said this in Abuja, during the launch of the #YourVoteMatters project by NESSACTION, an election observer group, on Monday.

The commission also said two persons have been recently convicted for illegal possession of PVCs in Sokoto and Kano states.

The project was supported by the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES); the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.

Haruna said, “We are aware some politicians are more or less buying the PVCs. If you collect the PVC and then you sell it out or allow someone else to have it, you are aiding illegal possession of the PVC which is an offense in our Electoral Act.

“Some of you are aware that only recently, INEC managed to convict two people who were found guilty of illegal possession of PVCs in Kano and Sokoto. So, I urge people to connect their PVCs, keep them safely, and make sure that on election day, you go out and cast your votes because, of course, without your PVC you cannot vote.”

The Executive Director of NESSACTION, Eniola Cole, said that the project scheduled for implementation in the FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau states, would provide logistics and give incentives to communities with low PVCs collection rates.

She said it aims to assist INEC in increasing the number of PVCs collected ahead of the 2023 general elections as well as the voters mobilized on election day.

Cole said, “We implore the general public to take advantage of the timeframe set by INEC for PVC collection at the Commission’s LGA offices nationwide from December 12, 2022, to January 5, 2023, and at the 8809 Registration Areas from January 6, 2023, to January 22, 2023, including Saturdays and Sundays.

“The public can, through dedicated channels, inform us of their location in order to receive support including the PVC collection buses and community outreach activities to be conducted at the local level in each state by our community mobilization officers.”
