School Feeding Programme: We Feed 9.9 Million Pupils Daily, To Include Another 5m — FG

The Federal Government, yesterday, explained that 9.9 million children are currently being fed nationwide, under the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, NHGSFP.

Speaking in Akure during the disbursement of money to poor and vulnerable individuals in Ondo State, under the Grant for Vulnerable Groups Programme, GVG, a component of its National Social Investment Programme, NSIP, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, said that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved that the programme should be expanded by another five million children.

The Minister, who spoke through the Ministry’s Director of Finance and Accounts, Matthew Dada, said: “I will also flag off the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, NHGSFP, which seeks to educate communities and stakeholders on the proper and more effective implementation of the NHGSFP.

“Under the NHGSFP, 9.9 million children are currently being fed nationwide, and President Buhari has approved that the programme is expanded by another five million children.”

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, who was represented by his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, said his administration would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure good living conditions for the people.

President Muhammadu Buhari met with the United States President Joe Biden in Washington DC on Wednesday.

Photos shared by the Presidency show Buhari in a meeting with Biden and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the White House on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leader’s Summit.

Buhari departed from Abuja on Sunday to join other African leaders for the summit aimed at rebooting US relations on the continent in Washington DC.

The US-Africa summit, which began in 2014, is the biggest international gathering in Washington since the COVID-19 pandemic and the most substantial commitment by a US administration to boosting its influence in Africa for almost a decade.

The summit, according to the US government, “will demonstrate the US enduring commitment to Africa and will underscore the importance of US-Africa relations and increased cooperation on shared priorities.”

On Tuesday, a clash between Vikings and Mafians confraternities in Akwa Ibom State claimed at least five lives in Uyo, the state capital.

The clash, it was gathered, occurred about 6:30 pm on and lasted for over two hours before police and soldiers came to the scene to quell the situation.

A tricycle operator in Uyo who was at the scene of the event, Aniekan Akpainyang, narrated that the incident started following a minor disagreement at a sports betting centre along Ikot Ekpene Road by Ibom Plaza area, adding that the incident triggered the old animosity between the two rival groups.

He explained that a member of the Vikings Confraternity placed a bet of N5,000 but refused to pay after losing the game noting that the shop attendant did not allow him to go insisting that he must drop his cellphone or any other vital belongings.

He further explained that the customer refused to drop any of the items. Instead, he called his members who arrived at the scene, beat up the attendant, and raided the shop.

The source added that the shop attendant mobilized his members and launched a reprisal attack on the Vikings which resulted in the death of five persons, two at the Plaza area, one at the Ikpa Road junction, close to the University of Uyo town campus, while two others, had earlier been killed at Okokon Etuk Street, some few meters to the Uyo City centre.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday but did not mention the number of casualties.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has condemned the act and promised that the perpetrators would soon be brought to book in accordance with extant laws.

He, however, urged the people to go about their lawful business as security has been beefed up in the area.

Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Counsel to the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has sued a self-acclaimed discipline of Kanu, Mazi Simon Ekpa for crime against humanity in the South Easterner part of Nigeria.

Defendants in the suit include: Simon Ekpa, Anibueze Juliet, Obinna Uzoaganaobi, Chukwuemeka Livingstone, and Raphael Ajaere.

The suit marked: CU/788/2022 was filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on December 12, 2022.

This is as an Igbo group based in Germany, has submitted a criminal complaint against Ekpa to the Prosecutor’s office of Southern Finland where the Ebonyi-born discipline of Kanu is based.

A copy of the complaint sighted by Vanguard read in part:” Submission of criminal complaint against Mr Simon Ekpa Njoku of Kauppaku 6, 15140 LAHTI, Finland with crimes against humanity, leading, participating in, supporting, funding and encouraging a terrorist organization currently engaged in numerous acts of terrorism in South Easterner Nigeria”.

It further read:”Previously working as a blogger and YouTuber, Simon Ekpa has since many months been propagating the restoration of Biafra over the social media channels while unleashing violence and massacre against the civilian population.

” In the last several years, some Nigerians of Igbo origin which fraudulently capitalising on the emotions people attach to Biafra, have generated enormous wealth for themselves in form of donations and other income through online traffic generated on social media by promising to restore Biafra”.

The writ of summons also read in part: “You are hereby commanded that within 30 days after the service of the writ on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in action at the suit of Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and notice that in defaulting, the claimant may proceed, and judgement may be entered in your absence”.

There has been public outcry against the five-day sit-at-home order issued by Ekpa which IPOB has since dissociated itself from, alleging that Ekpa is being used by the enemies to demonise the movement and destabilize South East.

Kanu has also since disowned Ekpa saying his approach is anti-people and anti-Biafra.

Violence Erupts In Ebonyi As Gunmen Kill One, Injure Others

Gunmen, on Wednesday, invaded the Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo community, in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi state and attacked the popular Nwakpu Market in the area, shot a motorcyclist in the head, and set a vehicle ablaze.

A community source, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the gunmen stormed the market when traders had already opened for business on Wednesday morning.

ABN TV reports that the Nwakpu market is opposite the country home of the Ebonyi State Deputy Governor, Eric Kelechi.

The source said, “The gunmen came into the market and ordered traders and shop owners to vacate the market. They also tell them to observe the sit-at-home.

“After dispatching the traders and shop owners, the gunmen set ablaze a vehicle. As the vehicle owner (name withheld) attempted to quench the fire, they (gunmen) shot him in the head and legs.”

Also, economic activities were, on Wednesday, halted in Abakaliki, the capital city as filling stations, banks, and event centres were shut down apparently to observe the sit-at-home order.

Confirming the incident, the Commander of the Ebubeagu Security Outfit, Mr. Friday Nnanna, said the attackers were not members of the Indigenous People of Biafra but mere hoodlums who invaded the market to rob traders of their belongings.

He said, “What happened was that some boys invaded the Nwakpu market to rob traders. They (gunmen) are not members of IPOB. This is because they (gunmen) came into the market with locally-made pistols.

“Ebubeagu is on ground to arrest those boys because we know the clothes they (the gunmen) are wearing, and so, we are after them.

“We are on track to get them. We are putting on our searchlight on them to arrest them. From now till tomorrow, we will apprehend them.”

Also, when contacted, the Commissioner for Police in Ebonyi State, Aliyu Garba, said he was in transit and could not respond to our Correspondent’s inquiry.

A splinter group of the Indigenous People of Biafra had last Friday, announced there would be a sit-at-home between December 9 and 14, 2022, warning that anyone seen outside during this period will be killed.

But IPOB, through its spokesman, Emma Powerful, had since distanced itself from the said sit-at-home order, saying the idea was anti-people and negated its principle.

The Labour Party has announced the postponement of the presidential campaign rally it planned to hold in Ekiti and Ondo states.

According to a terse statement, the party blamed unavoidable and unusual circumstances beyond its control.

The LP, however, promised to announce new dates for its rally in the states.

The statement read, “Due to some unavoidable and unusual circumstances beyond control, our earlier scheduled presidential campaign rally in Ekiti and Ondo for 15th and 16th December 2023 is hereby postponed. A new date will be announced. We regret the inconvenience caused by this.”

This comes a day after its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Baba Ahmed-Datti, moved their campaign train to Kogi State.

Since the October 18 commencement of rallies by the LP, the party has not been consistent with its schedule.

The rally held in Kogi on Tuesday had been announced to hold on October 23. Other rallies scheduled for October that failed to hold included the ones meant for Niger, Kwara, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River.

The party has also failed to stage the rallies scheduled for November in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and Sokoto states.

OPEC+ Countries Cut Oil Output Volume In November By Quarter The Planned Volume — IEA

OPEC+ countries in November 2022 reduced oil production by 480,000 barrels per day (bpd) instead of the planned 2 million bpd, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says in its December report. The real reduction in oil production by the alliance amounted to only a quarter of the planned volume.

“The bloc cut its collective output ceiling by 2 mb/d from November, but actual crude production fell by only a quarter of that as most of the members were already producing well below their targets,” the report says.

The volume of oil production by the members of the alliance decreased by 480,000 bpd compared to October, to 38.38 million bpd. At the same time, the target level of production by OPEC+ countries for November was 40.1 million bpd. That means that the production vs target indicator was at -1.72 mln bpd.

In November, Russia was able to increase oil production (excluding gas condensate) by 90,000 bpd to 9.81 million bpd, but still produces by 670,000 bpd below the target.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia reduced production by 420,000 bpd to 10.48 million bpd, having fully fulfilled its obligations under the OPEC+ deal.

At a meeting on October 5, the countries participating in the OPEC+ deal agreed to reduce production by 2 million bpd from November, and also extended the deal until the end of 2023. The countries’ production volumes in August 2022 were taken as the basis for calculating the reduction in oil production. The communique published at the end of the meeting noted that the decision to reduce production was made taking into account uncertainties both in the global economy and in the oil market. At a meeting on December 4, the countries of the alliance decided to keep the current plan for oil production.

The next meeting of the OPEC+ monitoring committee will take place on February 1, 2023, and the general meeting of the alliance is scheduled for June 4, 2023.

3.6 Million Nigerian Videos Removed By TikTok In First Quarter Of 2025

Lawmakers of the United States Senate have introduced a bill to ban the use of the popular social media platform, Tiktok, in the country.

One of the bill’s sponsors, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of the Senate Intelligence Committee, stated that the app was not just about creating videos, but it served as a major tool in the hands of the Chinese Government to obtain sensitive data from Americans.

“This is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day,” he wrote in a statement shared on Tuesday.

He added, “We know it’s used to manipulate feeds and influence elections. We know it answers to the People’s Republic of China. There is no more time to waste on meaningless negotiations with a CCP-puppet company. It is time to ban Beijing-controlled TikTok for good.”

The proposed legislation, in general, is aimed at protecting “Americans from the threat posed by certain foreign adversaries using current or potential future social media companies that those foreign adversaries control to surveil Americans, learn sensitive data about Americans, or spread influence campaigns, propaganda, and censorship.”

However, the bill mentions TikTok and its parent company, Bytedance, as well as other subsidiaries of the company, as social media platforms of particular concern.

The new bill follows a flurry of actions already taken by Republican-led states. States like Texas, South Dakota, and Maryland, have all moved to restrict the use of Tiktok on government-owned devices.

Similarly, the US military, the State Department, and the Department of Homeland Security have all restricted the app from operating on their computer devices.

Shortly before the end of his tenure, former president Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban the app unless it was sold to an American company. The order was challenged in court and was later overturned by the incumbent Biden administration.

Avoid Unnecessary Journeys – NYSC Acting DG Warns Corps Members

Corps Members have been warned to avoid unnecessary journeys and obtain approval from the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC if travel is necessary during the service year.

The Acting Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Christy Uba gave the warning while addressing the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Stream Two Corps Members at Sokoto State Orientation Camp in Wamakko.

She said any Corps member who travels without permission from the NYSC would be sanctioned in line with Corps Bye-Laws.

Uba also advised the Corps members to board vehicles from only designated motor parks and avoid the temptation of boarding vehicles by the roadside.

“Don’t board vehicles by the roadside, avoid free rides and make sure you don’t endanger yourselves”, she said.

Uba advised the Corps members to use the opportunity of the Orientation Course to create inter-tribal relationships that will promote national unity and integration.

She urged them to participate actively in all camp activities which have been packaged for their overall development.

“Be of good conduct, be diligent and avoid cutting corners. You must accord high priority to discipline throughout the service year and ensure you make up your mind to do things right.

”Shun cultism, cybercrimes, drug addiction, and other social vices that may cut short your life”, she added.

The Acting Director General informed the Corps members that all services in NYSC are free and advised them to beware of scammers that may want to defraud them through posting, redeployment, and other free services of the Corps.

She implored them to embrace NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme that has empowered several ex-Corps members towards self-reliance.

On the proposed NYSC Trust Fund, Uba said such innovation would make more Corps members business owners, through the provision of start-up capitals that would be made available to deserving ones as they exit service.

“Try to identify, harness, and develop the potentials that can make you self-reliant through vocational skills”, she said.

She further advised the Corps members to serve their fatherland with dedication, commitment, and humility.

The Acting DG counseled them to add positive values to their host communities by executing projects that would improve their living standard.

The NYSC Sokoto State Coordinator, Mohammad Nakamba, while presenting his camp report to the Acting Director General disclosed that a total of 639 Corps members comprising 221 males and 418 females were registered in the camp.

He added that since their arrival in camp, the Corps members have been in high spirits and actively participating in all camp activities.

He added that the camp has been complying with all the COVID-19 safety protocols as stipulated by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control.
