Qatar 2022: Messi Breaks Ronaldo’s Record After World Cup Win Vs France

Lionel Messi broke Brazil legend Ronaldo’s goal record at major international tournaments after leading Argentina to a third World Cup title since 1986.

Messi bagged a brace in Sunday’s dramatic final against France as Argentina won 4-2 on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 3-3.

And following his brace, Messi has scored 26 goals in major international tournaments for Argentina (13 World Cup, 13 Copa América).

It is the most of any South American player in history across the two competitions, overtaking Ronaldo (25).

Also, Messi joined their trio of Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Zinedine Zidane as the only players to have won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Ballon d’Or.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s final saw France star Kylian Mbappe become the second player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final.

Elon Musk May Step Down As Twitter CEO

Twitter’s new boss, Elon Musk, may be considering stepping down as the Chief Executive Officer of the micro-blogging company after less than two months on the job.

Musk tweeted a poll via his verified handle Sunday night asking tweeps to vote on whether he should step down as Twitter’s CEO, adding that he would abide by the poll’s results.

He tweeted, “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.”

As of Monday morning, with about six hours to the end of the poll, “Yes” was winning by a margin of 56.3% to 43.7%.

Since buying Twitter and taking over as CEO in late October, the billionaire owner of Tesla has been involved in a series of controversies on the ‘blue app.’

After buying the company for $44 billion from its former CEO, Jack Dorsey, Musk began to make some controversial changes to the company’s policy and personnel.

He sacked several of Twitter’s top executives and half of the company’s staff immediately after becoming its CEO, and announced a stop to remote working for the remaining, lucky employees.

He then gave the remaining staff an ultimatum that they needed to do “extremely hardcore” work or leave, an announcement that saw hundreds or so of the remaining staff quit the company.

The new CEO has fired employees who openly disagreed with his policies or tweets.

Musk went on to announce a new policy to commercialise the verification badge on the social media platform, a policy which raised dust among tweeps.

He first proposed a $20 monthly subscription fee for the blue badge, which he later slashed to $8.

He has frequently changed Twitter’s rules by executive fiat and with no prior notice and has banned tweeps who violated his new rules.

Recently, Musk disabled the Twitter Space feature from the app after having a heated argument with the host of a Twitter Space he participated in. The company, however, claimed that Space was disabled because of a little glitch. It has since been restored after backlashes from users.

In what seemed to be like a remorse for his unannounced policy changes, Musk tweeted Sunday night that every major policy change would now be subjected to a vote.

He wrote, “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again.”

2022 World Cup: France’s Approach In The Beginning Was Wrong -Udeze

Former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze has blamed France’s inability to attack Argentina in the first half as the cause of their loss to Argentina in the final of the 2022 World Cup.

Recall that Argentina took a 2-0 lead in the first half as the South American team dominated the play.

However, France came out in the second half to level the score 2-2 before the game went to extra time, where both teams scored again.

In a chat with Brila FM, Udeze stated that France’s approach to the match in the first half hurt them after all.

“France’s approach, in the beginning, was wrong. They could have started the game with the intensity with which they played the second half,” he told Brila FM.

“The solution was to attack, attack, and attack the Argentines. They were not supposed to relax if there was to be a change in fortunes earlier.

“They were playing ‘serere’ football and that wouldn’t help you.

“Aside from the Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry, a lot of Africans supported France because most of their players have African backgrounds.”

Rabiu Kwankwaso

Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP,, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso has claimed that the All Progressives Congress ,APC and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, are dead parties, saying the NNPP is the credible alternative in 2023.

Speaking weekend, during an interaction with the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, 19 Northern states and the Federal capital Territory, FCT, chapter in Kaduna, Kwankwaso said: “APC has proven to be worse than PDP. They are dead parties and if anyone thinks they will change for good, such person is either deceiving himself or being mischievous.

“In the coming elections, voting should not be based on sentiments in the choice of who becomes the president. As a Muslim I supported former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who are Christians to become president against Buhari .

“If there is any better candidate than me, I will support him in the interest of the country. If Nigerians make any mistake in the choice of leaders again in 2023, we should blame ourselves and nobody.

“I have contested elections 18 times, won 15 times and lost only three times. I have learnt so much about managing failure and successes. I have paid my dues politically over the years and understand how to manage the Nigerian challenges; I believe I am well prepared to govern Nigeria.

“With my political antecedents and management of our diversities like I demonstrated as governor of Kano State regardless of religion, tribe and ethnicity, I can replicate it in Nigeria if given the opportunity in 2023 as President. Today I am a Muslim with no denomination, I am for all because as a leader, you must be fair and just.”

Kwankwaso said, if elected president, he would rejig the security architecture and increase security personnel to address the security challenges bedeviling Nigeria, adding ” I will give education and employment a priority. I will come up with initiatives that will boost the economy.”

"Super Eagles Would Have Reached Semi-finals In 2022 World Cup" — Noble

Nigeria international John Noble believes the Super Eagles would have gotten to the semi-final of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Eagles lost to the Black Stars of Ghana in the playoffs in March to miss out on qualification.

After a goalless first leg in Kumasi, the Black Stars held the Eagles to a 1-1 draw inside the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja.

And at the just concluded World Cup in Qatar, Morocco became the first African country to reach the semi-finals.

But Noble posited that the Eagles were good enough to go all the way to the last four.

“If the Super Eagles had the opportunity to play at the World Cup this year it would have been a different thing altogether,” the 29-year-old said on Brila FM.

“The players were ready and wanted to give their best, especially those who have never been to the World Cup.

“If Nigeria had qualified it would have been a different story because I believe in the spirit in the camp and I believe Nigeria would have gotten to the semi-final.“

Noble, who currently plays for Enyimba and has been part of the Eagles since 2017, was part of the squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has lent his voice in the ongoing discourse about a mass exodus of the young Nigerian population to overseas in search of greener pastures, saying it is not the best.

While admitting that the country is a bit difficult for both the old and young people, he stated that the desire to travel outside the country as a means to achieve a better livelihood might not entirely be right but hard work instead.

He spoke on Saturday in a virtual discussion session with the Topic; “The Japa Rave amongst Nigerian Youths: Orji Kalu’s Thoughts” organised by the office of the Chief Whip of the Senate.

“Wherever people go, they think the best is to be outside Nigeria, its not the best. It’s just that we have refused to work hard, both young people and old people,

“This is not the way I started, I started very well as a young man, went to take palm oil from the South-East and go to the North. I went to buy beans, fish, cows, and all the rest from the North down to the South.

“People think there can be a Messiah today. There is nothing like Messiah, the best Messiah is hard work. People leaving this country is not the best idea. Rome was not built in a day,” he said.

The former Abia governor dismissed the insinuation that some of them who have made some fortunes in life attained their height through dubious means, saying hard work and resilience brought him to his status.

“Some of you (participants) are just growing up, some of you are 30 years because you see Orji Kalu, I went to be a governor of Abia state and so I became a thief. I have built industries since 1986, I was given Nigeria’s merit award in 1986, and the same year I built the vegetable oil company was when former President Ibrahim Babangida gave me a national award. To me, people should stick to what they want to do,” he said.

He called on leaders across the board to be positive and accountable to the people and drive equity.

The Abia North Senator said it has always been in his agenda to promote the welfare of young people, saying he mobilised the youths in Aba and Umuahia when he was governor and systemically built them through education, which he said formed the bedrock of success the state is recording in education today.

Africa IP SME Helpdesk: Promoting Economic Growth In Europe, Africa

The Africa IP SME Helpdesk is established to advance mutual cooperation between EU SMEs and African countries in matters of trade. The Helpdesk’s main objective is to contribute to sustainable development and economic growth in Africa while fostering new economic frontiers for EU businesses.

Inaugurated in Rome on October 21, 2021 during the EU-Africa SME Summit, the Helpdesk works with relevant IP Agencies and Organisations to create a mutually beneficial economic ecosystem between the EU and African States, by promoting bilateral cooperation in addressing intellectual property issues. It is part of the Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI) – an international cooperation project funded by the EU and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Economic indices have shown that the EU and its Member States constitute the most important trading partner for Africa. In 2021, EU exports of goods to Africa increased to EUR 288 billion from a low value of EUR 225 billion in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the largest exporters of goods to Africa in 2021 were France (€ 24 billion), Germany (€ 23 billion), Spain and Italy (both € 18 billion), the Netherlands (€ 17 billion) and Belgium (€ 16 billion). About 68% of the exports were manufactured goods.

Accordingly, the Africa IP SME Helpdesk supports European SMEs operating in, or intending to access the African market, to protect and enforce their Intellectual Property rights by providing free information, services and training to boost their capacity for global competitiveness. This is also in line with the objectives of the recent African Continental Free Trade Area which aims to eliminate barriers to trade in the region.

The Helpdesk has assisted more than 500 EU SMEs and produced numerous country factsheets, case studies, guides and training materials on the protection of IP rights in Africa, which are freely accessible on the Helpdesk website. It also established a dedicated helpline provides expert advice to businesses in five languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

As part of its advocacy engagements to raise awareness, the Help Desk participated in the 8th EU-Nigeria Business Forum recently held in Lagos under the theme, ‘Nigeria and the New Economy’. At the Forum, Help Desk Intellectual Property expert, Nta Ekpiken, was present and gave one-on-one consultations exclusively to EU SMEs on protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights in Nigeria.

European SMEs intending to operate or already operating in the African market are thus encouraged to contact the Africa IP SME Helpdesk to benefit from its free, professional, confidential and customized services covering the full spectrum of Intellectual Property concerns including copyrights, royalties, reciprocal agreements, patents, trademarks, designs, registrations and regulatory compliance issues.

The Helpdesk can be reached via email on [email protected] and on telephone, +34 96 513 9810. Its operational hours are 8:30 to 18:30 (CET/CEST), Monday to Friday.

Cross River Man Butchers Friend In Farm

A shocking incident occured in Olum community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, when a young man reportedly hacked his friend to death with a machete.

Reports from the area gave the name of the assailant as Emmanuel, while the victim is Akwande.

According to Patrick Osang, the eyewitness, three of them went to farm and after they had completed the portions allotted to them, they sat down to rest and take some refreshments.

“After the work, Emmanuel brought out his pawpaw and was eating, while Akwande was sucking oranges.

“I left the two of them and went to cut palm fruits. I did not hear any quarrel or exchange of words, but when I came back I saw Akwande lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut on his neck.

“I asked Emmanuel what happened. He did not say anything, but attacked me with his matchet,” the third friend said.

He said both of them then engaged in a knife fight, but none of them sustained any cut owing to the “odeshi” on their bodies.

“We fought with our knives, but the knives could not penetrate our bodies because of the juju inside both of us.

“But I was able to over power him and dragged him to the village,” he said.

He said three of them are from Obudu and went to Boki to clear forests for farmers to earn daily pay.

“We are friends from Obudu and came to Boki to work for daily pay.

“We have been living peacefully until Saturday afternoon, when Emmanuel killed Akwande.”

Ms Irene Ugbo, the Cross River Police spokesman said she was yet to be briefed on the matter.
