Katsina State governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, says the notion that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, will Islamise Nigeria if elected president in 2023 is spurious and nonsensical.

Masari spoke on Tuesday at a town hall meeting with a group of Northern Christians Political Forum when they received Tinubu’s wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, in Kaduna.

Masari opined that Tinubu is head and shoulders above other contestants, adding that even a blind man would elect Tinubu if assembled with other presidential candidates.

Masari described Lagos state as a mini Nigeria, saying both Christians and Muslims, as well as pagans, resided in Lagos, and yet Tinubu delivered.

“It is baseless to express the fear that Tinubu will Islamise Nigeria. It is not true. Did Buhari Islamise Nigeria after seven years in office? Did Obasanjo Christianise Nigeria after eight years in office? Did Jonathan make Nigeria a Christian country after six years in office?”

In his remarks, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said the major problem of the country was politics with bitterness.

He explained that when young men and women gather for a common cause without bitterness there would be hope for the country.

“History will repeat itself. During the military regime under General Ibrahim Babangida’s transition to civil rule, there was an election between MKO Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa of SDP and NRC. Abiola’s running mate was a Muslim. It was a Muslim-Muslim ticket that won the election. Tofa that picked a Christian running mate lost the election. So, Tinubu will win the election,” he said.

The Spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has described the two years jail term by a Federal High Court in Abuja, to Doyin Okupe, the embattled Director General of the campaign of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi as a political ambush.

Okonkwo stated this while speaking in an interview with Arise Television on Wednesday.

Recall that Okupe resigned his position as the Director General of the Obi-Datti campaign on Tuesday after he was sentenced to two years imprisonment for receiving over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki.

Okupe conveyed his resignation in a letter to his principal, the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.

Reacting to Okupe’s judgement, Okonkwo said, “We do not have anything to worry about, because the best they have gotten is that the man made an honest mistake. But look at PDP, we have President Olusegun Obasanjo, who happened to be the only principal that Atiku Abubakar ever served as a political appointee said Atiku is one of the most corrupt human beings on earth. The only principle that can appraise him.

“Wike said Ayu is the most corrupt National Chairman on record. He said he collected many billions of naira and that Atiku is aware of it. Has he resigned?

“So, when you talk about comparison, the worst of Labour Party is still better than the best of the PDP and APC combined,” he said.

Former Nigeria international Samson Siasia says the Super Eagles would have been embarrassed at the just concluded 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after losing to eternal rivals Black Stars of Ghana in the playoffs in March this year.

However, the Black Stars crashed out in the group stage after winning one and losing two games

Cameroon and Tunisia also crashed out in the group stage but recorded victories against Brazil and France respectively.

AFCON champions Senegal and Morocco were the only African teams who progressed into the round of 16 with the latter making history as the first African country to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

And speaking after the conclusion of the World Cup, Siasia dismissed talks that the Eagles would have done well.

“We would have been embarrassed out of the World Cup with shocking score lines,” Siasia was quoted on Football Live.

“The Super Eagles have no business going to the world cup and losing out to the Ghana team we played against is enough proof.”

Siasia was appointed Eagles coach in 2010 but was fired in 2011 after failing to lead the team to the 2012 AFCON.

In 2016 Siasia returned as Eagles coach on a temporary spell after the resignation of former teammate Sunday Oliseh but once again failed to pick the 2017 AFCON ticket.

The 55-year-old helped Nigeria win the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia and was a member of the side that featured at the World Cup the same year.

FG Prohibits Polytechnics, Monotechnic Others From Awarding Degrees,

The Federal Government has directed polytechnics, monotechnic and other allied institutions to stop awarding degrees.

The National Board for Technical Education conveyed the government’s decision to heads of the affected institutions in a circular marked TEB/PRO/E/12/Vol.11/132 dated December 1, 2022.

A copy of the document signed by the board’s Director, Polytechnic Programmes Department, Ogoh Ngbede, was obtained by PUNCH on Tuesday.

Ngbede, in the circular, expressed the Federal Ministry of Education’s dismay at the increasing number of tertiary institutions in the country offering programmes for which they were not originally designed.

He however said the government has given the affected institutions four years to graduate the last set of students already admitted for such programmes.

The circular read in part, “Polytechnics and other technical institutions in the country should immediately stop admitting students into degree programmes.

Similarly, polytechnics and allied institutions awarding Nigerian Certificates in Education should restrict themselves to technical courses.

“However, already admitted undergraduates for these programmes should be allowed to round up the programmes into which they are already admitted.

“Institutions have been given a period of four years (up to 2026) to graduate their last set of students for such programmes.”

Recalls that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has over time called on the government to allow polytechnics to award degrees.

The union’s National President, Anderson Ezeibe, noted that the award of degrees by polytechnics would end the current dichotomy.

“Policymakers have made it a rule that once an individual has an HND, he cannot attain the peak of his/her career, then why are they continuing to force it on people, why don’t they phase it out and replace it with Bachelor of Technology?”

According to him, the Nigerian polytechnic system has all it takes in terms of infrastructure and human capital to award Bachelor, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in the area of technology.

Former Chelsea defender, William Gallas says it will be difficult for Man United defender, Harry Maguire to retain his spot in the defence at Old Trafford despite his impressive display at the 2022 World Cup.

According to him, the club is “too big” for the Red Devils captain, explaining that this is the reason the former Leicester City man has not been performing well at the Theatre of Dreams.

Maguire has lost his position in the Red Devils’ starting eleven, with manager Erik ten Hag preferring new-signing Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane over the England defender.

Meanwhile, Maguire has only made four appearances in the Premier League this season.

Gallas, who played for both Arsenal and Chelsea during his active days, insisted that Maguire does not have the speed and agility required by defenders.

“Manchester United is too big for Maguire,” he told Genting Casino.

“That is why he has not performed there. I’m not sure if Tottenham will want him at the back.

“They need defenders but Maguire would not be good for them. He is almost 30 years old and he does not have as much speed as others. The older he gets, the less speed he will have.”

Taliban Bans Women From Attending Universities In Afghanistan

The Taliban regime has announced the closure of universities to women in Afghanistan, BBC reports.

A letter by the higher education minister indicated that the move is until further notice and is expected to take effect immediately.

It further restricts women’s access to formal education, as they were already excluded from most secondary schools.

One Kabul University student told the BBC that she had been crying since she heard the news.

After the Taliban took over the mantle of leadership of the war-torn country last year, universities introduced gender-segregated classrooms and entrances, where only female students could be taught by women professors or old men.

The latest measures are said to likely cause further concerns in the international community.

Robert Wood, US Deputy UN Ambassador has strongly condemned the Taliban’s latest actions, when he said, “the Taliban cannot expect to be a legitimate member of the international community until they respect the rights of all Afghans, especially the human rights and fundamental freedom of women and girls.”

Afghanistan’s education sector was badly affected after the Taliban takeover and there has been an exodus of trained academics after the withdrawal of US-led forces last year.

NSCDC Imo Command Denies Receiving Report On Organ Harvesting

The Zamfara State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned miscreants and criminals to keep away from the State during the yuletide.

The State Commandant, Mr. Bello Mohammed Mua’zu stated this while addressing newsmen in the command’s headquarters in Gusau, the State capital, shortly after the deployment of the operation order for the yuletide season.

The Commandant said that the Corps in the State had deployed over 600 personnel to effectively man every nook and cranny of the State before, during, and after the season.

He charged the Rapid Response Unit, the Agro Rangers, and other special units of the Corps to clamp down on anyone who attempts to breach the peace during this period.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said the commission will need 100,000 vehicles and 4,200 boats to distribute election materials across the 176,846 polling units for the 2023 general election.

The chairman said the boats would be accompanied by Navy gunboats to ensure safety of the materials and its personnel.

Yakubu spoke at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between INEC and the Road Transport and Marine Workers’ Unions yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “The signing of a revised MoU with the road and marine transport unions today is a demonstration of our determination to implement key recommendations of the review exercise in order to enhance forward and reverse logistics in our electoral operations.

“The 2023 general election will involve the nationwide deployment of over 1 million personnel and massive quantities of materials twice within a period of two weeks from our state offices to 774 local government areas, 8,809 electoral wards and 176,846 polling units across the length and breadth of our country. It will require over 100,000 vehicles and about 4,200 boats that will be accompanied by naval gunboats.

“This is a huge undertaking that must be accomplished in the next 66 days and we are resolute in doing so to give Nigerians a pleasant voting experience.

“Let me assure Nigerians that we are determined that all polling units nationwide will open at 8.30 a.m on Saturday, February 25, 2023, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections and on Saturday, March 11, 2023, for the governorship and State House of Assembly elections.”

He added: “In order to ensure that personnel and materials will be at the polling units on Election Day awaiting the arrival of voters, rather than the other way round, INEC requires large numbers of vehicles, including motorcycles, tricycles, boats and canoes in the riverine areas which cannot be met from its internal resources. It was for this reason that the commission signed the first MoU with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in January 2015.

“In order to expand the pool of our service providers to meet the requirement for the increasing number of vehicles, the MoU was reviewed in December 2018 to incorporate Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). Over the years, the commission has come to rely on the partnership with the NURTW and NARTO to provide vehicles for the successful deployment of electoral personnel and materials.

“However, we did not incorporate the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) within the ambit of the MoU, a situation which has often resulted in logistics nightmare in the deployment and retrieval of personnel and materials to the riverine areas of the country. This oversight is now addressed by the revised MoU to include MWUN comprising sailors, dockworkers and those in related trades in our electoral logistics planning and delivery.

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 19 youths at an event centre in the metropolis for allegedly attending a same-sex marriage programme.

The suspects, who were in their early 20s, were at the event centre to witness the wedding of two suspected homosexuals, identified as Abba and Mujahid.

Hisbah officials were said to have stormed the scene before the commencement of the wedding rites, as 15 females and four males were arrested.

Confirming the incident, the Commander General of the board, Sheikh Harun Ibn Sina, said the arrest was made after a report from a resident.

He said the duo tagged as bride and groom, Abba and Mujahid, escaped after the arrival of officials of the agency.

The commander-general said the organiser of the event, 21-year-old Salma Usman, was in custody, adding that the board would intensify efforts to arrest the fleeing couple.

He said the board would hand over those in custody to the police for necessary action, as most of the ladies claimed to have been invited for the wedding from neighbouring states.

An accountant with the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu, Emmanuel Sombo, has been sentenced to 304 years imprisonment for forgery and stealing of N34. 9 million from the account of the college.

Sombo, who was convicted, last week, by an Enugu State High Court, presided over by Justice Kenneth Okpe, after a long trial, which started in 2010, had pleaded not guilty to the 61-count charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in suit No E/56C/2010.

He was alleged to have on several occasions forged the signatures of principal officers of the institution on promissory notes with which he cashed monies running into N34 million from the college account for his personal use.

The principal officers including the Provost, the Registrar and the Bursar denied signing the cheques with which the accused withdrew the monies.

The EFCC forensic experts, who took samples of the principal officers’ signatures, confirmed that the ones on the cheques used in the transactions were forged.

Delivering judgement on the matter, Justice Kenneth Okpe said they based on the weight of evidence before the court, the court had no difficulty in concluding that the accused person personally forged the signatures on the disputed cheques or was assisted to forge the documents.

“The court is satisfied that the circumstantial evidence placed before it is cogent, compelling and points irresistibly to the fact that the accused person committed the offence of forging the disputed cheques. He acted alone and is still alone as he could not call even one witness from the college to support his defence.

“These elements of the offence are present in the instant case and I, therefore, hold that the prosecution has proved all the ingredients of the offence of forgery beyond reasonable doubt and accordingly I find the accused guilty of forgery as charged in counts 32 to 61.

All the elements of stealing are present in this case. The accused person in his statement to the EFCC said he knew that the disputed cheques were fraudulently issued but he was asked by his Boss to play along.

“He cashed the cheques and disbursed the proceeds in a manner that permanently deprived the Federal College of Education Eha-Amufu of the ownership of the money. I therefore also find the accused person guilty of the offence of stealing as charged in counts 1 to 31”.

“I will therefore sentence the accused person, Emmanuel Sombo to 7 years imprisonment for each of the offences of stealing in counts 1 to 31 in the Amended information, 217 years.

“I also sentence him to 3 years imprisonment for each of the offences of forgery in counts 32 to 61 of the Amended Information, 87 years. However, the entire sentences are to run concurrently with effect from today. This is my judgement in this case.”
