The presidency said President Muhammadu Buhari will campaign for the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and all other candidates of the party with “full energy and conviction.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Wednesday titled “President Buhari ready to campaign for Tinubu and all APC candidates with energy and conviction.”

This vow comes on the heel of concerns that the president has not featured in campaigns since the national launch in Jos, Plateau State in mid-November.

But, the Presidency said while Buhari remains committed to party politics, the functions and duties of the President will take precedence.

According to Shehu, the President “assures the All Progressives Congress and its candidates in the elections next year that he is ready at all times to campaign for the Presidential Candidate and all party candidates with “full energy and conviction.”

“This is to dispel expressed concerns in certain quarters that the President has not featured in campaigns since the national launch in Jos, Plateau State and to stress that while he remains committed to party politics, the functions and duties of the President will equally be upheld at times.”

Citing the President’s remarks to the Nigerian community in Washington DC in the course of his recent visit to the United States, the Presidency said Buhari “is ready to campaign for the party’s victory in the general elections next year.”

The President noted that the APC campaigns have so far been the most aggressive in recent history.

“‘They have been impressive and of a high voltage,’ compared to the opposition that seems to be playing catch-up. He expressed strong optimism that the party will win all the elections fairly and squarely,’ the statement read.

The candidate of APC for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia state in the 2023 election, Chief Dan Chimezie Okeke has said his commitment for a more developed and improved constituency that will enhance the living standard of his people is his driving force.

According to him, if elected a member of the National Assembly, he will use the opportunity for the good of the people and to better their economic and social life.

In a chat with newsmen recently, he made it clear that his desire for the constituency is to put mechanisms in place to create a conducive environment for the emergence of a better society, paying special attention to the youths and women as they play a tremendous role in societal development, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Oti Maduabuchi Orieji said in a statement.

Mezie Abia as he is popularly called also outlined his numerous antecedents as a pointer to the fact that he is the most qualified and sincerely motivated candidate to drive a people Oriented and progressive tenure as the Member Representing the good People of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.

He charged the people to enquire properly about candidates and their antecedents before they throw weight behind such candidates.

“Arochukwu and Ohafia this is our best chance to get it right, by sending our best and most qualified in the person of High Chief Daniel Chimezie Okeke of the APC to represent us at the green chamber,” the statement added.

39 Children Kidnapped By Gunmen On Katsina Farm

Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday allegedly attacked Governor Hope Uzodinma’s General Manager for Owerri Capital Development Authority, OCDA, Francis Chukwu.

It was gathered from an eyewitness that the attack took place around Ishinweke in the Ihitte Uboma local government area of the state at about 06:25 pm.

At the time of filing this report, no reason was given for the attack but one of the eyewitnesses alleged it was an attempt to kidnap the OCDA GM, Chukwu. While others linked it to the 2023 general elections.

In the attack, two Hilux vehicles said to belong to the security agencies were attacked and set ablaze. The attacks and shootings which were said to have lasted for over thirty minutes saw sporadic shootings around the area.

It was reported that not less than five persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

However, at the time of filing this report, there were reports that some persons within the convoy were still reported unreachable as well as others sustained gunshot injuries as many scampered for safety.

At the time of filling this report,  Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Micheal Abbattam, said he was not aware and that he should be given time to find out the details.

Hoodlums Attack Another INEC Office In Imo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its office in Isu Local Government Area office in Imo State has been attacked and vandalised.

National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Festus Okoye, said this on Wednesday in Abuja.

This is the fourth attack on INEC facilities in Imo State in less than three weeks following previous attacks on Orlu and Oru West Local Government Areas and the state headquarters in Owerri.

Okoye said the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, reported that the office was attacked and vandalised.

The incident occurred at the early hours of Tuesday, 20th December 2022.

“Eight windows were smashed, and burglary proofs removed. Fortunately, the attackers could not access the building. Movable and immovable equipment as well as other materials were not removed or vandalised.

“However, as a precautionary measure, critical materials such as ballot boxes and voting cubicles have been evacuated to another INEC facility for safekeeping.

“Similarly, all uncollected PVCs have been secured while security will be deployed to ensure the continuous collection of the cards by registered voters in the same premises,” Okoye said.

He said that the incident has been reported to the Police and other security agencies for necessary action.

Insecurity: Igbo Group Carpets South East Governors Over Poor Performance

An umbrella body of Igbo associations based in the United Kingdom, the Ogbako Ndi Igbo UK, has accused the governors of the South East of not doing enough to secure the people, lamenting that there has been consistent erosion of security in the region.

In a communique after a meeting on the state of Igbo land and made available to reporters in Awka, the chairman of the group, Dr. Jude Eze and secretary, Mazi Stanley Amadi, the group observed that the issue of kidnapping and destruction of farmlands had been on the rise.

They said that because of the ugly situation in Igbo land, the group has, since its inception in 2013, engaged in profering solution to the problems in the South East.

They said: “There has been sustained erosion of security in our Igbo homeland. This has heightened with incessant kidnappings, vandalization and takeover of farmlands of our people purportedly by Fulani armed herdsmen.

“IDP camps are being set up in Igbo land for our people displaced by these activities. We are thus in a situation akin to war-times while supposedly in a peace-time!

“One of the primary responsibilities of any government is to protect lives and properties of citizens and we still cannot comprehend how these unlawful and evil acts can continue to go on for so long and remain unpunished in a country where the rule of law is said to be paramount”

They recalled that in their previous letter to the governors of the South East states, Ogbako Ndi Igbo UK solicited for concerted efforts by the governors to tackle the security challenges facing our people, regretting that while some of their suggestions towards improvement of security in Igboland, such as the formation of a regional security outfit was seemingly adopted leading to the emergence of Ebubeagu Security outfit, the mechanism of its formation and their modus operandi had left much to be desired as they have become a tool of oppression of perceived political enemies and not a fair and just security enforcement agency it was purportedly set up to be.

They added: “We task our state governors do more to protect our people when they are under attack before things escalate out of control as is currently the situation in Eha-amufu and other flashpoints in Igboland.

“The people affected should be adequately taken care of in the interim and restored back home with adequate protection as soon as possible with compensation for losses where required.

“We declare our support for the community vigilante groups working to protect our people at home and call on the various state governments in the South-East to align their efforts with them by providing them every necessary backing, with a view to getting rid of the evil perpetrators who inhabit our lands/forests”

The group also spoke on the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing what he is passing through as denial of justice.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was abducted illegally from another country and confined to solitary confinement by the Federal government with regular disobedience of all court rulings regarding his human rights and release.

“This is even more worrisome when terrorist group leaders are walking around freely, ostensibly because of their religious affinity with the people at the helm of the country.

“Justice delayed is justice denied and Ogbako Igbo UK is worried that true peace will not return in our homeland as long as Nnamdi Kanu continues to be detained illegally.

“We ask for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the full restitution of his human rights which has been eroded by his unjust arrest and prolonged incarceration”

On the 2023 general elections, the group said the people were desirous of true Igbo leaders both in social and political spheres, arguing that the forthcoming elections present Igbo with an unabashed opportunity to select genuine Igbo representatives both locally and more importantly at the centre, who will be accountable to the people and who will work for the progress of Igboland.

“We may regret the coming years even more if we miss this opportunity”, they said.

The Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly and the PDP flagbearer for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji MNSE has fulfilled the promise of a transformer he made to the people of Umuizu Okwulaga Afaraukwu Community, Umuahia North LGA.

The Speaker who made the promise during an event organised by women of the community on the 12th of November, 2022, where the leaders approached and appealed to him to help them change the transformer that supplied light to Umuizu Okwulaga but which had broken down irreparably thereby throwing the entire area into darkness.

Moved by their plight, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji who had vowed that no community covered by his constituency would be left in darkness, there and then promised that he would replace the broken transformer for the people in no distant time.

Today, the Speaker made good his promise as a 500KVA transformer was delivered and installed for the people of Umuizu Okwulaga Afaraukwu.

The Speaker’s gesture threw the entire communiry into jubilation and had many of the people publicly displaying their joy as they danced and hugged one another in ecstasy.

Reacting, leaders of the community including the President General of Afaraukwu, Chief Ugwumba Oriaku, the President General of Okwulaga Afaraukwu, Chief Levi Ogbonna, a foremost women leader of the community, Chief Mrs Love Ezebuiro, the PDP flagbearer for Umuahia Central State Constituency, Pastor Ugochukwu Uchegbu among others thanked the Speaker for his genuine commitment to the people’s welfare and for exhibiting practical leadership that positively impact the people.

They all promised to support him and ensure that they mobilise massively for him at the 2023 Federal House of Representatives election and ensure he wins with a landslide.

On his part, the Councillor representing Ward 5 at the Umuahia North Legislative Council and an indigene of Okwulaga, Hon Andrew Donatus Uwaga described the Speaker as a leader with exceptional qualities who deserves all the support he can get to make him achieve his ambition of representing the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency. He further said that the Speaker is a leader whose political rise will always benefit the people and promised that he would mobilise resources and join hands with others to ensure the Speaker wins at the forthcoming election.

In her own remarks, the President of Okwulaga Afaraukwu Development Union (Women’s Wing) Mrs Adaugo Melody Uche recalled with gladness that the event which the women organised under her leadership on the 12th of November has yielded such a great fruit. She hailed the Speaker as one who makes promises and fulfills them as he has also fulfilled the handsome monetary promise he made to them at the event, saying that the women of Okwulaga in particular and the people in general have adopted the Speaker as their sole candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency and for whom all their votes will be cast on the day of election.

The transformer donated to the people of Umuizu Okwulaga Community is one in a long list of transformers so far donated to communities by Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji since 2015 till date, and still counting, as part of his Direct Touch Initiative.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court yesterday removed the Chief Ralph Nwosu-led executives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Specifically, Justice Nyako barred ADC and Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu from extending his tenure of office after it had expired going to the extant provisions of the ADC Constitution.

The court also nullified all actions taken by executives from August 21, 2022, to date.

The Court’s Judgement is in favour of Kingsley Temitope Ogga and other plaintiffs in suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/1541/2022.

The court held that the party was bound by the extant provisions of its Constitution, and therefore, the actions taken by the ADC and Chief Nwosu in wanting to extend Nwosu’s expired tenure of office is unconstitutional, null, void, and of no legal effect whatsoever.

Justice Nyako also ordered the ADC to conduct a Special Convention for election to the positions of the ADC national chairman, and members of its National Working Committee (NWC).

In the suit filed and argued by a leading constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, Justice Nyako answered in the affirmative, all the three questions posed by the plaintiffs under Articles 2; 17 (2) m, n, o, p; 23 a, b; and 24 (a) of the ADC Constitution, 2018, as amended.

The judge consequently granted all the reliefs sought by the Plaintiffs (Kingsley Temitope Ogga and 9 others) who had sued the ADC, Chief Nwosu, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suit before Nyako was commenced by means of an Originating Summons filed on the 30th of August, 2022.

The questions put by the plaintiffs for determination were: “Whether, having regards to Article 2, Article 17 (2) m, n, o, p and Article 23 a, b of the Constitution of the African Democratic Congress, 2018 (as amended), the tenure of office of the Chairman and members National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant elected and sworn into office at the National Convention of the 1st Defendant held in Osun State on the 28th day of August 2018 does not expire by effluxion of time at the expiration of 4 years from the date of their being sworn in.

“Whether, having regards to Article 23 (a) and (b) of the Constitution of the African Democratic Congress, 2018 (as amended) and the mandatory requirement for the giving of 7 days notice of a National Executive Committee meeting of the 1st Defendant summoned by the National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant, the purported National Executive Committee meeting held at the instance of the 2nd Defendant wherein the tenure of the National Officers of the 1st Defendant elected and sworn into office on the 27th day of August 2018 is not null and void and of no effect whatsoever.

“Whether, having regards to Article 24 (a) of the Constitution of the African Democratic Congress 2018 (as amended), on behalf of ADC the National Officers of the 1st Defendant can be validly elected or their term of office extended other than by the National Convention of the 1st Defendant.

The reliefs sought and granted in the Originating Summons are as follows:
“A declaration that the tenure of the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant who was elected and sworn into office at the National Convention of the 1st Defendant held on the 28th day of August 2018 expired by effluxion of time upon the expiration of 4 years from the date of their being sworn in being midnight on the 27th day of August 2022.

“A declaration that only the National Convention of the 1st Defendant can elect and or extend the tenure of the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant.

“A declaration that the purported emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the 1st Defendant held on the 25th day of August 2022 is null, void, and of no legal effect whatsoever, not having been convened upon the giving of at least 7 days’ notice to the Plaintiffs and every other member of the 1st Defendant eligible to attend the meeting as mandatorily stipulated in the Constitution of the 1st Defendant.

“A declaration that the purported resolution passed at the purported emergency National Executive Committee meeting of the 1st Defendant held on the 25th day of August 2022 extending the tenure of the 2nd Defendant as the National Chairman of the 1st Defendant and the tenures of the other members of the National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant who was elected and sworn in at the National Convention of the 1st Defendant held on the 28th day of August 2018 is null, void and of no legal effect whatsoever.

An order of perpetual injunction restraining the 2nd Defendant and the entire National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant elected and sworn in on the 28th day of August 2018 from parading themselves or holding themselves out in any manner as the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee of the 1st Defendant.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the 3rd Defendant, whether, by itself, its Chairman, officials, agents, privies or otherwise howsoever, from recognizing, dealing with or in any manner related with the 2nd Defendant as the National Chairman of the 1st Defendant beyond midnight on the 27th day of August 2022.

ADC has been enmeshed in crisis as a faction loyal to Dumebi Kachikwu, the party presidential candidate and another loyal to Nwosu had been at war over the control of the party for some months now.

A faction loyal to Nwosu had announced the sack of Kachikwu as the party’s presidential candidate in August.
However, loyalists of the presidential candidate in retaliation also announced the appointment of Akwashiki as Caretaker chairman of the party.
They also inaugurated a seven-member Caretaker Committee to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2023 polls.

UK Court Declines Ekweremadu’s Bail Application

The Central Criminal Court, London, also known as Old Bailey, has again denied bail to former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

In the pre-trial hearing on Tuesday, the court gave its verdict denying the bail on the grounds that he was a flight risk.

It was learned that the court cited the letter and assets forfeiture proceedings against the senator by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

In the bail application, Ekweremadu’s lawyer had argued that the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Attorney-General of the Federal had written to the court that Ekweremadu was not a flight risk.

His defense also argued that a guarantee to produce him should he pose a flight risk was given and that the Nigeria High Commission in the UK had equally given the option of tagging Ekweremadu electronically to monitor his movement.

Referring to attestation of Ekweremadu’s character by respected Nigerians and organisations, his lawyer also argued that the lawmaker had proven to be a caring and responsible father and could not escape from London, abandoning his wife and sick daughter.

The defense further told the court that they had sureties and securities of nearly half a million pounds sterling from 11 people to secure Ekweremadu’s release on bail.

Stating that Ekweremadu was a highly regarded, well-known public figure, his defense also referred to Ekweremadu’s involvement in some global humanitarian courses.

However, the prosecution insisted that Ekweremadu was a flight risk contending that as a holder of international passports from two other countries, the lawmaker could escape to any of the other countries asides from Nigeria.

The prosecution also cited the 18th July 2022 letter by the EFCC signed on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Abdulraheed Bawa, by the Assistant Director Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkoi, and referred to the assets forfeiture proceedings against Ekweremadu in the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Refusing the bail application, the Judge said, “I am entirely satisfied there remains a flight risk,” noting that bail would not make much difference “as the trial is just over a month away.”

Ekweremadu’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), claimed that the EFCC truncated Ekweremadu’s bail application in July.

Amongst other things, Awomolu also accused the EFCC of dishonestly obtaining an interim assets forfeiture order against the lawmaker by withholding vital information from Justice Inyang Ekpo.

However, the EFCC dismissed the allegations through its lawyer, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), saying it was a mere coincidence.

The trial of the Ekweremadus will now begin on 31st January 2023.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, launched the National Monitoring and Evaluation platform, EYEMARK.

Buhari launched the project monitoring website (www.eyemark.ng) with its accompanying mobile app shortly before the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting at the council chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President noted that the federal government could no longer depend on its handful of Monitoring and Evaluation teams to oversee the vast number of infrastructure projects spread nationwide.

He said that given that his regime has invested in infrastructure projects more than any other before, it is only fitting to create adequate avenues for close monitoring by citizens.

He said this will close the existing gaps and promote citizens’ participation in governance.

Buhari also blamed the spate of corruption on the poor implementation of infrastructure projects across the country.

With EYEMARK, the president said, “The status of projects and the total amount appropriated and dispensed so far are now available in the public space.”

He urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to cooperate with the coordinating ministry, Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning to avail the required information to be captured on the platform.

In his address earlier, the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, said EYEMARK would empower citizens and Civil Society Organisations to monitor capital projects in real-time to promote accountability.

Agba noted that the platform leverages a large network of citizens who can monitor projects in their localities.

However, he warned that relying on the public comes with the risk of misinformation.

Therefore, EYEMARK has been equipped with spatial technology to track images and ascertain their origins.

“If a user is in Kaduna, we can determine the authenticity of the reviews. And we can know if the image was uploaded from the location the user claimed it was sent from,” he explained.

Agba also revealed that the website and its accompanying app were developed by Nigerians of the average age of 24, with inputs from stakeholders and industry experts.

Before the meeting, the council observed a minute silence for a departed member, Demola Seriki, a former Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources under the Umaru Yar’Adua administration.

Before his death on December 15, Seriki, 63, was Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain.

In attendance were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; and Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan.

Also physically attending the meeting are Ministers of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Dr. Zainab Ahmed; Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; Aviation, Hadi Sirika; Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare; Science and Technology, Olorunimbe Mamora; and Police Affairs, Maigari Dingiyadi.

Others are Minister of States for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba; Environment Sharon Ikeazor and Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

Joining virtually are the Ministers of Education, Adamu Adamu; Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; Defence, Bashir Magashi; Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite; and his state counterpart Sen. Gbemisola Saraki; Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management, Social Development, Sadiya Farouq; Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; and Industry, Trade and Investment (State), Maryam Katagum.
