The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Usman Baba, wants law-abiding citizens and parents to encourage their children and wards to take interest in policing.

Baba made the appeal in a message he sent to the passing out of 374 Police constables from the Police Training College, Oyin Akoko, Ondo State.

He said more people should join the police not just as a career but to contribute to nation building.

His message was delivered by AIG Y.M Akeera, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 17, Akure.

He charged the new police constables to be good ambassadors on the job by exhibiting good character and professionalism at all times.

“It has become imperative for you to abide by the laws guiding policing and also be good role models so as to encourage others to toe the line of policing.

“You must shun acts that are at variance with the standards of the Police, as the force does not spare anyone who errs,’’ he warned.

In his remarks, ACP Adebayo Rafiu, the Commandant of the training school, congratulated the constables and charged them to be diligent, selfless, patriotic, and be good ambassadors of the school.

INEC has insisted that the recently appointed Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign Director-General (DG), Akin Osuntokun, remains the senatorial candidate for Ekiti Central Senatorial Zone under another political party, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Mr Osuntokun was appointed the director-general of Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed’s campaign following the resignation of the former DG, Doyin Okupe.

Mr Okupe resigned after he was convicted for breaching the Money Laundering Act by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

But the appointment of Mr Osuntokun, a member of the ZLP, has generated questions as to where his loyalty lies between both parties.

In an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Mr Osuntokun stated that he had abandoned his senatorial ambition under ZLP to take up Peter Obi’s campaign DG post.

It is unclear if he has officially defected to the Labour Party but the LP’s spokesperson, Yinusa Tanko, told our reporter on Thursday that Mr Osuntokun, despite being a candidate of the ZLP, had been working with the LP.

He said Mr Osuntokun, who was the campaign coordinator of the South West campaign council of the LP, is now a member of the LP “by implication.”

“There are so many other people working with Peter Obi under the directorate of campaign council who do not belong to any political party —not even the Labour Party, but they are working independently under the campaign council,” he said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

“And there are also others registered with other political parties who are working directly under the big tent in the Labour Party presidential campaign council. So, therefore, that of Akin Osuntokun started when he was a member and a candidate of Zenith Labour Party which he abandoned completely because he listened to the clarion call that all of us have to work together to rescue Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the electoral commission said neither Mr Osuntokun nor the ZLP can withdraw his candidacy for the Ekiti Central senatorial seat.

INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, told PREMIUM TIMES that no individual or political party can at this point withdraw, submit or substitute the name of any candidate taking part in the 2023 general elections, stressing that Mr Oshuntokun remains ZLP’s Ekiti Central Senatorial candidate.

“The law is very clear,” he said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “The period for substitution and the period for withdrawal in our (INEC) timetable and schedule of activities as well as in the electoral act, has elapsed.”

Brazilian football icon Pele, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time and a three-time World Cup winner who masterminded the “beautiful game,” has died at the age of 82, his family said Thursday.

“Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram.

Named athlete of the century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999, Pele is the only footballer in history to win three World Cups — 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Nicknamed “O Rei” (The King), he scored more than 1,000 goals in one of the most storied careers in sport, before retiring in 1977.

He had been in increasingly fragile health, battling kidney problems and colon cancer — undergoing surgery for the latter in September 2021, followed by chemotherapy.

Born October 23, 1940, in the southeastern city of Tres Coracoes, Edson Arantes do Nascimento — Pele’s real name — grew up selling peanuts on the street to help his impoverished family get by.

His parents named him for famed American inventor Thomas Edison.

But he was soon given the nickname Pele, for his mispronunciation of Bile, the name of a goalkeeper at Vasco de Sao Lourenco, where his footballer father once played.

Pele dazzled from the age of 15, when he started playing professionally with Santos. He led the club to a flurry of titles, including back-to-back Intercontinental Cups, against Benfica in 1962 and AC Milan in 1963.

Known for his genius with the ball, he epitomized the sublime style of play called “samba football” in Brazil, where he was declared a “national treasure.”

He scored an all-time record 1,281 goals in 1,363 matches for Santos (1956-74), the Brazilian national team, and the New York Cosmos (1975-77).

But beyond his records, he will be remembered for revolutionizing the sport, his ever-present number 10 on his back.

The first global football star, he played a lead role in the game’s transformation into a sporting and commercial powerhouse, tapping his preternatural athleticism despite his relatively small size — 1.70 meters (just under five-foot-seven).

He also played with heart, visible in the iconic black-and-white footage of the 17-year-old phenom bursting into tears after helping Brazil to its first World Cup title, in 1958.

Eight years earlier, seeing his father cry when Brazil lost the 1950 World Cup final at home to Uruguay, he had promised to bring the trophy home one day.

Police Service Commission Approves Suspension Of Christmas Day Killer Cop

Following the recommendation of the Inspector General Usman Alkali Baba on Wednesday seeking the immediate suspension of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Drambi Vandi over the killing of lawyer, Bolanle Raheem on Christmas Day in Lagos, the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday approved the request.

The PSC in a letter to the IGP, signed by its acting Chairman Justice Clara Ogunbiyi said the commission has “carefully examined the facts of the case, observations and recommendation concerning allegations against the officer and approved the suspension of the officer from duty with immediate effect.”

The letter titled “Re-Request of Suspension from Duty: AP/ NO 134901 ASP DRAMBI Vandi ” with reference No. AP 134901/fs/FHQ/ABJ/9 was dated December 28.

“The Commission also directed that the final investigation into the matter is concluded to enable the Commission take further necessary action,” a statement signed by the PSC’s spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani noted.

Vandi had fired at Raheem’s vehicle after flagging them down along the Ajah under-bridge area of Lagos State, which led to her death on Christmas day.

The commission had earlier condemned the “unprovoked killing of the lawyer” while demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Commission also called for proper training of police personnel on weapon management.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Professor George Obiozor, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, worldwide.

The President, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, condoled with Obiozor’s family, the government and the people of Imo State as well as Ndigbo, at home and in the Diaspora.

Buhari, who described his demise as an immeasurable loss to the country, said the former Ambassador of Nigeria to the United States, High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus, Ambassador to the State of Israel and former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) exemplified leadership skills and values as a diplomat.

The President said the contributions of the unique leader and strong proponent of peace and a stable polity, who also held other strategic public positions, would never be forgotten.

President Buhari expressed hope that all who mourned the demise of the statesman, who commanded great respect among his peers in the academia and foreign policy arena, would honour his memory by actively embracing his beliefs and ideas geared towards uniting Nigeria beyond geo-political considerations.

The President who had fond memories of meeting Prof. Obiozor on several occasions and valued his endearing sense of patriotism, joined the Igbo nation in mourning the irreparable loss of this great son of Nigeria and prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased.

 

NBA Demands N5bn Damage Over Killing Of Lawyer, Bolanle Raheem By Policeman

The Nigerian Bar Association says it will seek the payment of damages not less than N5bn in addition to the swift prosecution of the cop culpable in the killing of a Lagos-based lawyer, Bolanle Raheem.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa made this known in a statement on Thursday.

Adegboruwa urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to follow the model that he adopted during the EndSARS Judicial Panel to pay compensation to Raheem’s family.

NBA TO MONITOR TRIAL OF KILLER COP, SEEK COMPENSATION FOR FAMILY OF THE DECEASED

The Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, is to monitor the trial of ASP Drambi Vandi, the policeman that shot and killed Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem in Lagos on December 25, 2022. The Association will also press for monetary compensation for the family of the deceased by the relevant government agencies. This was disclosed in a press statement released by Lagos Lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN.

Nigerians woke up to the shock of the death of Mrs Raheem who was shot in the Ajah area of Lagos inside her car on her way back from an outing with her family. The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch to which Mrs. Raheem belongs, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwana, contacted Mr. Adegboruwa to lead the team of lawyers for the NBA that will monitor the trial of the killer Cop.

The NBA Lagos in conjunction with the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Y.C. Mikyau, SAN, has decided to be part of the prosecution of the policeman as part of its efforts towards securing quick and effective justice for the family of the deceased. In this regard, the NBA will be partnering with the Ministry of Justice during the trial. Mr. Adegboruwa has in turn obtained relevant briefing from the Hon Attorney-General of Lagos State and has secured the assurances of an accelerated prosecution once the case file is received from the police.

The NBA is also seeking monetary compensation for the family of Mrs Raheem from the government of Lagos State, the Federal Government and indeed the Ngieria Police Force and the Police Service Commission, through its Human Rights Committee. The NBA will seek for payment of damages not less than five billion naira in addition to the prosecution of the killer Cop.

Mr. Adegboruwa has in addition urged Governor Babajide Sanwoolu to follow the model that he adopted during the EndSARS Judicial Panel to pay compensation to the family of Mrs. Raheem immediately since it is an established fact that her life was terminated illegally by a policeman. Mr. Adegboruwa also called for the immediate implementation of the EndSARS Judicial Panel Report in which far-reaching recommendations were made in relation to:

1. Psychological orientation for all police officers in the handling and use of weapons;
2. Training for police officers on basic human rights observance and enforcement;
3. Improving the welfare of all police officers in terms of their take home pay, conditions of service, their places of work and residences in order to make them more conducive;
4. Recruitment of more police officers to reduce the pressure upon the existing officers whose number is not adequate to effectively police the country.
Mr. Adegboruwa stated further that it is unacceptable that the issues that led to the 5 for 5 demands of the youths and the EndSARS protests in 2020 have not been addressed despite repeated promises from the government. He urged the government and the relevant authorities to go beyond mere press statements of lamentations on the gruesome murder of Mrs. Raheem and to accelerate the prosecution of the killer and payment of compensation to the family of the deceased and all other victims of police brutality.

IPOB: Police Reveal How Army Deserter Who Killed Gulak Was Arrested

Imo State Police Command on Wednesday said it arrested a deserter from the Nigerian Army and one of the notorious and vicious commanders of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Lance Corporal Nwangwu Chiwendu also known as “Onyearmy”.

The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Mike Abattam, paraded the suspect in Owerri.

He said the native of Amaohuru Nguru in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State was arrested December 23, 2022, around 10.30 am in his hometown.

He said the 34-year-old who had been on the command’s wanted list had confessed that his group was responsible for the killing of Adamawa State-born politician, Ahmed Gulak, and security personnel in various locations in the state.

Mr Gulak, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was shot dead by gunmen in Owerri on 30 May 2021 on his way to Sam Mbakwe Airport en route to Abuja.

Abattam said the commander of the militant wing of the IPOB known as Eastern Security Network (ESN) and his group adopted a gorilla-like operation by unleashing surprise terror attacks and then going into hiding in neighbouring states.

He said: “In the course of interrogation, the terror Kingpin confessed to have enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 2013, where he trained as an engineer and became an expert in weapons handling and servicing of all heavy automatic weapons.

“He rose to the rank of Lance Corporal before he deserted the Army and joined the Indigenous People of Biafra and its arm affiliate, Eastern Security Network through one, Ebubechukwu (surname unknown) and became the operational commander and chief trainer of the outlawed group where he claimed to have trained over one thousand members in weaponry and terror attack in their camp located in Ogbotoukwu, a forest, in Obowu LGA of Imo State.

“He further confessed to have participated and led in several vicious killings of security personnel, attacks on INEC offices, burning of police stations, murder of innocent people, armed robbery/kidnapping, terrorism and narrated how on 30th May, 2021, they murdered the late Ahmed Gulak, the former political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“He confessed that he led the operation and they double crossed and stopped the Toyota Camry taxi car that was taking him and his friend to the airport and ordered them to come down, shot him but the bullet did not penetrate his body, so he went to him and removed the rings on his right fingers, shot and killed him along airport road.”

Law Permits Former Governors, Deputies To Go Home With Official Cars — Osun Speaker

Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Mr Timothy Owoeye, on Wednesday said the state law empowers governors, their deputies and some top public officials to go with their official vehicles when they retire from office.

Owoeye made this known during plenary, while reacting to the call made by Gov. Ademola Adeleke, asking the former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, his deputy, cabinet members and some public office holders who served under the previous administration, to return the official vehicles in their custody.

The speaker said, according to the State Public Office Holders (payment of pension and severance packages) Bill 2018, signed into law in 2019, the former governor is empowered to go away with his official vehicles.

He, however, invited the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr Teslim Igbalaye, and the state Chief of Staff, Mr Kasim Akinleye, to come for a holistic discussion on the matter.

“I want to call on the SSG and Chief of Staff to let us discuss this matter holistically. Apart from the fact that we have a Public Office Holders (payment of pension and severance packages) Law, that was passed in 2019, I will not say anything further until I see the SSG and Chief of Staff.

“Both of them are not summoned to appear before the Assembly, but to let us come together for discussion. There are so many things we can settle without denting the image of anybody,” the speaker said.

Similarly, the speaker said the issue of the total debt profile of the state was being investigated by a 10-man committee of the Assembly, empowered by Sections 128 and 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999).

He said the sections of the constitution allows the Assembly to investigate further, the real debt profile of the state, which the Assembly initiated on December 21, 2022.
