The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu has dismissed the endorsement of Peter Obi, his Labour Party rival, by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a statement which Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media, and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, issued on his behalf, Tinubu described the endorsement as worthless.

He described Obasanjo as a political paperweight, who cannot win his polling unit for Obi in the election.

“We respect the democratic right of former President Obasanjo to support and endorse any candidate of his choice in any election.

“Except that he made it known formally in his new year message, any discerning political watcher in Nigeria knows that Chief Obasanjo’s preference for Peter Obi is expected. He had earlier stated his position at various public events, the last being at the 70th birthday anniversary of Chief John Nwodo, former President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Enugu.

“We make bold to say that our party and candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not lose sleep over Obasanjo’s move, as Obasanjo is notorious for always opposing progressive political forces, as he did against MKO Abiola in 1993.

“The endorsement is actually worthless because the former President does not possess any political goodwill or leverage anywhere in Nigeria to make anyone win a Councillorship election let alone win a Presidential election. He is a political paperweight.

“He is also not a democrat anyone should be proud to be associated with. We recall that in 2003 and 2007 general elections when he was a sitting President, Obasanjo used all the coercive instruments of State at his disposal to railroad people into elective offices against the will of Nigerians as expressed at the polls. In 2007, he declared the polls a do-or-die affair after he failed in his bid to amend our constitution to have a third term.

From our records, President Obasanjo has not successfully made anyone win election in Nigeria since then.

“Not even in Ogun State can anyone rely on his support or endorsement to become a governor or Councillor.

“We pity Peter Gregory Obi as we are confident that Chief Obasanjo can not win his polling unit and ward in Abeokuta for Obi in the coming Presidential election on 25 February, 2023.

“Chief Obasanjo’s endorsement is not a political currency Mr. Peter Obi can spend anywhere in Nigeria because he is not a political force, even in his part of the country.

“Chief Obasanjo similarly endorsed Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peoples Democratic Party candidate in 2019 against President Muhammadu Buhari. Atiku was walloped by Buhari with a wide margin in the election,” Onanuga said.

Political Positions Occupied By Those Not Qualified — Peter Obi

The Nigeria Presidential Project (NPP) 2023 has endorsed the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as its preferred candidate in the February 2023 presidential polls.

The organisation said in Enugu, yesterday, that it took the decision to endorse Obi because of his demonstrated integrity, competence, good experience, and capacity.

NPP 2023 is a political advocacy organization with the objective of actualizing the full integration of the South East geopolitical zone into Nigeria’s political power distribution with particular attention to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Declaring support for Obi, NPP 2023 Chancellor, Dr. Walter Oji, called on all Nigerians especially the people of the South East geopolitical zone to render their voices, resources and commitment, toward the actualization of the full objective of the noble aspiration of the South East zone to produce the next President of Nigeria.

Oji said: “Nigeria’s power rotation has been a South to North and North to South arrangement with the president and office of the president rotating from the Southern region to the Northern region and from the Northern region to the Southern region as the case may be. Under this arrangement and with our incumbent President coming from the Northern region, Northwest political zone precisely and serving out his second tenure, the position of the president is obviously to rotate to the Southern region which consists of three geopolitical zones namely, South West geopolitical zone, South-South geopolitical zone, and South East geopolitical zone.

“It is trite that South West geopolitical zone produced former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007 and the incumbent Vice President since 2015. While the South-South geopolitical zone produced former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from 2009 to 2015.

“Therefore, there should be no doubt, there should be no question and indeed there should be no equivocation about the rightful demand by the South East geopolitical zone that it is the turn of the South East geopolitical zone to produce the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023. This will signify the full political reintegration of the South East geopolitical zone into Nigeria’s political power distribution.”

He recalled that in July 2020, when the Nigerian Presidential Project 2023 was launched, the organisation urged the governments, political parties, political action groups, Elder Statesmen and Women, Leaders of thought, Religious Leaders, Traditional Leaders, Women Leaders, Youth Leaders, and all well-meaning Nigerians to come together to work for the actualization of the full reintegration of the South East zone by supporting the zone’s presidential aspiration.

“Others like all of us have what they can collectively contribute to the new dispensation to liberation, restoration and salvaging of Nigeria.

“One other important point to make about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost.

“In other words, he has people who can pull his ears, if and when necessary. He has a young and able running mate with a clean track record of achievement both in public and private life.”

NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that an initial search of the suspect’s two checked-in bags almost made him a free man as there was nothing incriminating found there until the NDLEA officers took a second look at the duty-free shopping nylon bags containing packs of ‘candies’ he was holding in his hands.

“A thorough examination of the duty-free shopping bags revealed the packs of candies inside were actually used to conceal 105 parcels of cocaine weighing 2.8 kilograms and 43 grams of cannabis.

“Preliminary test conducted on a plastic bottle of body lotion also found in possession of the suspect also tested positive to cocaine with a total weight of 472 grams,” Babafemi said.

Married to a Brazilian lady with a daughter, Chux who claimed to be in the clothing business in Brazil was hoping to sell the drug in Enugu, his state of origin.

Meanwhile, three other traffickers were arrested by operatives with a total of 256kgs of illicit substances seized from them during interdiction operations in Kwara, Kogi and Niger states in the past week.

While commending the officers and men of the MMIA, Kwara, Kogi and Niger state commands for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), urged them along with their compatriots across the country to step up their offensive action against drug cartels in the new year with an equal focus on drug demand reduction efforts.

Sen. Kalu Pushes For Stronger Ties Between Nigeria, Djibouti As He Hosts Djibouti's Speaker

Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu on Saturday played host to the Speaker of the Djibouti National Assembly, Mohamed Ali Houmed who is in Nigeria for a 4-day tour.

Upon their arrival at Enugu International Airport, Sen. Kalu had led the Speaker and his entourage to the Enugu home of prominent Enugu Politician Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa where they were treated to a brief reception.

Sen. Kalu described Africa as the cradle of the world’s civilisation and the emerging destination of global investment which can be achieved through the unity and diplomatic cooperation amongst its nations.

According to Sen. Orji Kalu, civilisation began in Africa , saying that the continent is on the verge of becoming the global rallying point for investment.

Kalu admitted that though like Nigeria other countries are also experiencing economic difficulties, he however stated that such problems were not peculiar to only Africa but globally.

The former Governor identified the COVID-19 pandemic and global depression as the major causes which were however not insurmountable by Africa.

Africa is one , this is where civilisation started and extended to other parts of the world . The new frontier for investment is Africa. I am confidently telling you that development is coming to Africa, but we must come together and unite as one despite our cultural and religious differences to achieve this.

“We have difficulties all over the world , during my foreign trips I’ve seen people complain bitterly of hardship even in the United States of America, so we must come and work together in Africa to solve our own problems because we have the resources and we are one”, Kalu expressed.

Similar, Speaker of the Djibouti Parliament , Mohamed Houmed thanked Kalu and Ohaa for hosting him and his entourage consisting of his family members and associates.

Houmed corroborated Kalu’s statements on the need for African Unity to fast track the continent’s development.

Houmed called for deeper economic relations. “In Africa we are one from the East to the West, North and South. Our cultures might be different but our goals to develop Africa are common. This is why I had no fear coming with my whole family and my associates to Nigeria on Kalu’s invite because for us this is home too. In Africa we have the resources to build our continent for our own benefit but we must unite to make this happen” he said.

Chinyeaka Ohaa, a former Federal Permanent Secretary, expressed gratitude to the Senate Chief Whip for leading the delegation to his home and also thanked Houmed for coming.

Ohaa briefly explained the history of Enugu as the main city of the old Eastern region to the foreign delegates. According to him the state has produced notable personalities who contributed immensely to the development of the South East and Nigeria at large.

Ohaa also aligned with Kalu and Houmed on the need for Africa to unite, specifically mentioning that neighbouring nations should share electric power to boost power generation amongst themselves.

The Djibouti Speaker, Family, Others will be at Sen. Kalu’s Camp Neya , Igbere country home for the new year holiday.

Opening Dialogue With Leaders Of Terror Group Part Of Solutions To Insurgency — Theatre Commander

0

Talks with the commanders of terror groups form part of the “non-kinetic” aspect of ending Nigeria’s 13-year insurgency war, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in the North-East, Major General Chris Musa has said.

Maj-Gen. Musa made this known on Saturday during a live appearance on Channels TV’s 2022 In Retrospect, an End-Of-Year special.

When asked whether talks should be held with terrorists or not, the Major General said, “Most definitely. You will find out what we are facing now is a kind of insurgency that has run for 13 years.

“For us to be able to get this wrapped up, we need to be able to get the non-kinetic aspect and this non-kinetic aspect has to do with good governance, reaching out to the commanders of these groups including looking and searching out where sponsors are.”

The major general said the insurgents including fighters of the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have realised that they cannot take over Nigeria.

“They have seen within themselves that they cannot take out the Federal Republic of Nigeria, they cannot face the Armed Forces.

“So, it is good that we open other windows as we are doing this, there will be dialogue behind the doors. So that they give them a leeway to exit so that there will be peace because they know it is just a matter of time,” he said.

The theatre commander, however, said the military won’t compromise its stance on ransom payment, emphasising that the military won’t support the payment of ransom to marauders and kidnappers.

He said insurgents fizzle out during military operations and move into other countries in the Lake Chad only to return after military operations.

According to the theatre commander, the solution to terrorism in Nigeria should start from good parenting system, good schools. He advised that capacity be built from behind; schools should be in place, lectures given on security awareness in schools, good governance, database of citizens, amongst others.

“We need to go back to be able to build capacity from behind: our schools must be in place, we must have good governance, we must be able to curtail and understand who are Nigerians and how do we do this? Build up capacities,” Maj-Gen. Musa said.

“Every Nigerian must take ownership of what is going on: don’t throw blames but take ownership,” he said.
