The Senate and Governing Council of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, have selected the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Chief Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa, for an honorary doctorate degree in Communication and Media Studies.
The recognition was conveyed in a letter dated October 10, 2026, signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Celestina U. Njoku, on behalf of the university’s Founder, Chancellor, Management and Senate.
According to the letter, the university’s decision to honour Ukwa followed an assessment of his contributions to human development, particularly in the areas of education, social development, economic empowerment, infrastructure and human capacity building.
The institution explained that its honorary doctorate awards are reserved for a select number of distinguished individuals within and outside Nigeria who have made significant contributions to society through their respective fields of endeavour.
Gregory University noted that Ukwa’s contributions to development in Abia State and beyond informed its decision to recognise him with the prestigious academic honour.
The university stated that the award is intended to acknowledge individuals whose activities and achievements have positively impacted communities and contributed to national development.
The letter of notification was formally presented to Ukwa by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Professor Uwaoma Kalu Uche.
The honorary doctorate degree, Honoris Causa, is scheduled to be conferred on Ukwa on December 12, 2026, during a ceremony at the university’s Goodluck Jonathan Auditorium in Uturu, Abia State.
The recognition comes as Ukwa, the APC candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, continues his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ukwa has also been associated with educational and community development initiatives through the Ikenna & Jenn Ukwa Foundation, including its recently launched Back-to-School Programme aimed at providing educational materials to pupils and students across Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.
The forthcoming award will add to the public recognition of his contributions to community and human capital development.
