APC Abia Lawmaker Akaliro Dumps Party, Joins LP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, the Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary, has officially resigned from the party.

In a resignation letter dated September 2025 and addressed to the APC Chairman of Umuahia North LGA, Hon. Akaliro cited persistent internal crises, factional disputes, and a lack of cohesive leadership within the party as key reasons for his departure. The lawmaker, the sole APC representative in the Abia State House of Assembly following the 2023 elections, expressed frustration over being marginalized and excluded from party activities, stating that he had never been invited to any meeting or event by the state APC leadership.

Hon. Akaliro also criticized the continuous cycle of suspensions and counter-suspensions of APC officials at ward and local government levels, describing it as evidence of the party’s deep-seated disunity.

After consultations with his constituents and political allies, the lawmaker announced his decision to align with Governor Alex Otti’s administration, praising it as “visionary and development-oriented.” Known for his principled and grassroots-driven politics, Hon. Akaliro’s defection has been widely regarded by observers as a move guided by integrity and loyalty to his constituents rather than party allegiance.

His departure marks a fresh setback for the APC in Abia State, while simultaneously bolstering the influence of Governor Otti’s Labour Party-led government.
