Nigeria Cheers Finnish Court Over Simon Ekpa Terrorism Judgment

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has applauded the judgment delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which sentenced Simon Ekpa to six years imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, the Defence Chief described the ruling as a “significant step in the global fight against terrorism,” stressing that it sends a strong message that individuals who incite or sponsor violence will face justice—no matter where they are.

General Musa lauded the Finnish judicial authorities for their resolve in ensuring justice was served, while commending the collaborative efforts of Nigerian security agencies, intelligence operatives, and diplomats who provided vital evidence that aided the conviction of the self-styled Biafra agitator.

“This verdict is a clear signal to those who hide behind international borders to fan the flames of violence in Nigeria that their actions will not go unchecked,” the CDS noted.

He further pledged continued collaboration with international partners in the ongoing efforts to dismantle global terrorist networks and neutralize the influence of extremist groups.

General Musa also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and supportive of the military and other security agencies in their unwavering mission to combat insurgency and violent separatist movements threatening the peace and unity of the nation.

Simon Ekpa, a controversial Finland-based Nigerian, has gained notoriety for allegedly inciting violence in Nigeria’s South-East region under the guise of separatist activism.
