Community Leaders To Be Held Responsible For PHCs In Abia

The Abia State Government has called on traditional rulers, president generals, and other community leaders to take full responsibility for the management and protection of primary healthcare centres (PHCs) and other public health facilities within their communities.

Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, made this appeal during the commissioning of three newly renovated PHCs. He issued a strong warning against any act of vandalism, stressing that the government would not tolerate the destruction or theft of public property.

The newly inaugurated PHCs are located in Asa Okpulo and Obuda communities in Aba South Local Government Area and Umuafor village in Obingwa LGA. Each facility has been equipped with brand-new beds, vital signs monitors, radiant warmers, essential drugs, and other critical medical equipment.

Professor Uche explained that the ongoing renovation of 200 PHCs across the state is part of Governor Alex Otti’s broader initiative to ensure accessible and high-quality healthcare for all Abia residents, especially those in rural areas.

He expressed optimism that the revitalized health centres would significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. According to him, qualified doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel have already been deployed to the centres.

“Pregnant women can now consult with doctors and nurses at these centres as needed,” he said.

“All necessary equipment, including ultrasound machines, are available. This community is fortunate to be among the first beneficiaries of the 200 PHCs under renovation.

Therefore, it is your duty to protect these facilities from theft or damage. The government has made a significant investment, and we will not accept any excuses for negligence.”

In response, the traditional ruler of Asa Okpulo, HRH Eze Enyinnaya Uchenna Aron, expressed deep appreciation to the state government, describing the intervention as unprecedented. He urged the government to provide job opportunities by employing local youths to help safeguard the centers.

The monarch assured that community leaders would collaborate with authorities to ensure the security of the facilities.

The event also featured free medical screenings and treatment for residents of the host communities.
