A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has passed away at the age of 89.
The news of his death was confirmed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, who stated that the former CJN died in the early hours of Friday.
Uwais served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. After his tenure on the bench, he went on to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee inaugurated by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The influential committee featured a number of notable Nigerians, including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and renowned human rights lawyer Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.
As of the time of reporting, funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Tributes from across Nigeria’s legal, political, and civil society communities are expected to follow in the coming days.
