Ebonyi Governor Increases Doctors’ Salaries, Launches Major Health Sector Overhaul

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a salary increase of ₦500,000 for newly recruited medical doctors working in primary healthcare centers across the state.

He made the announcement during the flag-off of a statewide health activation program, which includes the launch of a Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) and the distribution of modern medical equipment to general hospitals.

Governor Nwifuru revealed that his administration has invested over ₦10 billion in upgrading health facilities, procuring equipment, and strengthening the healthcare workforce. As part of efforts to address manpower shortages, the government has hired 195 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists, who are now deployed across the state’s general hospitals.

“This is not just a ceremony,” the governor said. “It is a strong statement of our commitment to transforming the healthcare sector as part of our administration’s People’s Charter of Needs.”

He acknowledged the longstanding issues of underfunding, lack of personnel, and inadequate equipment in the health sector and emphasized that change must begin now.

The newly launched Drug Revolving Fund is designed to ensure a continuous supply of essential medicines in all general hospitals, with a structure that promotes sustainability, transparency, and accountability. According to Nwifuru, over 60% of essential drugs have already been delivered, with the rest on the way.

He also announced the distribution of critical medical supplies, including hospital beds, patient monitors, mattresses, and consumables, worth over ₦1 billion.

“These tools are not decorative—they are essential for saving lives,” he said, adding that the state is also working with institutions to train and retrain healthcare workers in line with global standards.

The governor called on community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations to take ownership of the newly upgraded facilities and help ensure proper management and protection of public resources. He warned that mismanagement or diversion of resources would attract strict consequences.

Looking ahead, Nwifuru revealed plans to establish specialist hospitals in each of the state’s three senatorial zones to provide advanced medical services and reduce dependence on medical tourism. He also highlighted efforts to partner on healthcare financing and digital systems to improve access and efficiency.

“Today marks a new beginning for healthcare in Ebonyi,” Nwifuru declared. “This is a call to action—for health workers, communities, and all stakeholders—to join us in building a system that delivers hope, healing, and health for all.”
