Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has declared that the party “will rise again,” reaffirming its unity and strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wabara made the statement on Monday in Abuja during the formal inauguration of newly nominated BoT members drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory. The event, held at the National Executive Committee (NEC) Hall, marked a significant step in the party’s internal reorganisation efforts.
Among those in attendance were Senator Adolphus Wabara; former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana; former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue); former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; former Presidential Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Ndi Obi; Secretary of the BoT, Senator Ahmed Makarfi; Senator Zainab Kure; Acting National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo; Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyegikuro; Deputy National Youth Leader, Hon. Timothy Osadolor; and other members of the PDP National Working Committee.
Wabara, addressing the gathering, stated, “I am truly overwhelmed, and I am certain that my colleagues and friends here today share this sentiment. It is deeply moving to witness the enduring strength and quality of Nigerians within this great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This speaks volumes about our resilience and unity.”
He added, “Today, we are honoured to witness the inauguration of new members to the Board of Trustees, in line with Section 32 (1f) and (g) of our party’s Constitution, as amended in 2027. This occasion is not only a celebration of a new beginning but also a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to the values and principles that define the PDP.
“Your appointment is a call to service; a call to uphold the integrity, unity, and vision of the PDP as we strive for a more prosperous and democratic Nigeria.
“As custodians of the party’s conscience, the Board of Trustees plays a critical role in offering wise counsel, fostering stability, and ensuring that our decisions align with the core objectives of the PDP.
“We are privileged to have such experienced individuals join the Board of Trustees. Your wisdom will undoubtedly guide us to success in 2027 and beyond.
“We do not hold meetings frequently, but we convene when necessary, in accordance with our constitution and in response to challenges. Some may perceive the Board of Trustees as slow, but we are deliberate and diplomatic in our approach.
“The PDP has risen, and the PDP will triumph in 2027. We remain committed to producing leaders who will serve with dedication and integrity, prioritising the interests of all Nigerians.”
He also emphasized the importance of the event: “This gathering is critical. Had we known the extent of support and presence from such esteemed members, we would have gone to even greater lengths to showcase the vitality of the PDP.
“Nevertheless, I implore the media here today to capture the essence of this event. The presence of such a distinguished retinue dispels any speculation about disunity or defections.
“As long as the Board of Trustees remains vibrant, the PDP remains alive. The PDP shall rise again, and I am confident in our collective resolve to achieve this.”
Mild Drama
A light moment of drama unfolded during the event when Wabara invited the newly inaugurated members to stand for camera recognition. Professor Jerry Gana suggested shortening the process due to time constraints, but Wabara insisted on full participation. Former Governor Samuel Ortom backed Wabara’s position and personally stepped forward to receive his appointment letter, symbolising unity and mutual respect.
Representing Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, Acting National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo delivered a message of appreciation: “Members of the party, I am particularly pleased that this is my first assignment in this role. To begin with, the elders are a testament to the wisdom and understanding I will need to fulfil my duties.
“The Board of Trustees is the conscience of the party, and the Constitution entrusts it with the great responsibility of guiding the PDP, not just as Nigeria’s leading party but as a beacon for Africa.
“We in the NWC are here as your chief servants, ready to rely on your advice and guidance. Congratulations to the nominees. This is a day of joy and celebration for all of us.”
Senator Ahmed Makarfi, BoT Secretary and coordinator of the inauguration, clarified that the process is ongoing. “This ceremony is a formal one, and with the chairman’s permission, I will read the names of those whose nominations have been confirmed. The process of nominations is still ongoing, and as additional names are finalised, they will be duly inaugurated.”
He expressed gratitude to those in attendance and reiterated the importance of a fully functional BoT to the PDP’s future.
The inauguration was conducted in line with Sections 31(5) and 32(1) of the PDP Constitution, which define the roles of the BoT, including maintaining party discipline, advising on policy, managing internal disputes, and safeguarding party assets.
It also addressed concerns that 85 of the 127 former BoT members had become inactive, reinforcing the need for a revitalized advisory body to steer the party toward the 2027 elections.
With the newly inducted trustees, the PDP projects a more unified and energized front as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
