The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to May 14, 21, and 22, 2025, following continued cross-examination of witnesses and presentation of evidence by the prosecution, ABN TV reports.
Kanu appeared in court on Wednesday, May 8, amid tight security, as the prosecution continued to present documents and video evidence aimed at linking him to alleged inciting broadcasts, the formation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and unrest in parts of the Southeast.
In his defense, Kanu clarified several claims made by the Department of State Services (DSS), insisting that the ESN was created solely to protect local communities and farmers from criminal attacks. He emphasized that IPOB is a peaceful movement and reiterated that he was not arrested but abducted and brought back to Nigeria against international laws.
During proceedings, the defense team, led by a group of senior advocates, objected to some of the prosecution’s materials, questioning their admissibility and relevance. A key moment was Kanu’s assertion that the invasion of his home by security operatives in 2017 led to the deaths of 28 innocent individuals.
As the court session ended, Justice Omotosho announced May 14th, 21st, and 22nd as the next hearing dates, allowing both sides time to prepare further arguments. The trial continues to draw attention from human rights groups and international observers who have repeatedly called for a fair and transparent judicial process.
