A Department of State Services (DSS) operative on Friday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed disciple of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will soon be extradited from Finland to Nigeria to face trial over his involvement in the Biafran separatist movement.
The operative, identified in court as Prosecution Witness AAA (PWAAA), made the revelation during cross-examination by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Responding to Agabi’s inquiry on whether other individuals were being prosecuted for agitating for Biafra, the witness noted that while he could not confirm others, Simon Ekpa had been arrested and was currently undergoing extradition proceedings.
The DSS operative, who was part of the team that arrested Kanu in a Lagos hotel in 2015, also confirmed during the hearing that no weapons were found on Kanu or the woman who was arrested alongside him. However, he maintained that various electronic gadgets and documents recovered during the arrest could suggest intentions “beyond ordinary use.”
“Although the items may not be offensive on their own, the intention behind them could be,” the witness told the court.
He clarified that his role in the case was limited to the arrest and obtaining of Kanu’s statement, and that he did not personally analyse the recovered items.
Presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho, adjourned the matter to May 6, 7, and 8, 2025, for continuation of the cross-examination.
The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has continued to generate national and international attention as issues surrounding self-determination, free speech, and national security remain central to the proceedings.
