Brigadier General Unachukwu has officially assumed duty as the 15th General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division and Commander, Sector 1, Operation HADIN KAI, following a formal handover ceremony held Thursday at the Division Headquarters in Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri.
Unachukwu, a seasoned officer with prior experience leading the 21 Special Armored Brigade in Bama, Borno State, and most recently serving as Commander of 63 Brigade and Sector 1 South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, was praised for his operational competence and leadership.
He succeeds Major General Abubakar Haruna, who has been redeployed as Director of Future Casting at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
In his farewell remarks, Haruna expressed gratitude for a successful tenure and commended the troops for their unwavering loyalty. He described his successor as a capable leader with deep knowledge of the operational terrain and expressed confidence in his ability to build on existing gains.
Brig.-Gen. Unachukwu, in his inaugural address, thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for the trust placed in him. He described his appointment as a rare privilege and vowed to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
The ceremony featured the symbolic signing of handover notes, the presentation of the division’s insignia, the transfer of the command flag, and ceremonial flag hoisting to mark the leadership transition. Other highlights included a farewell address by the outgoing GOC, a group photograph, and inspection of the quarter guard.
