Zimbabwe’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was declared the winner of this week’s presidential election with 52.6% of the vote, according to the country’s electoral commission on Saturday.
Mnangagwa, who succeeded longstanding leader Robert Mugabe following an army coup in 2017, was generally expected to win re-election for a second term.
According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, his primary rival, Nelson Chamisa, received 44% of the presidential vote.
Mnangagwa barely defeated Chamisa in the 2018 presidential election.
