In a heroic act of quick thinking and bravery, a group of youths in the NIN office, Umuahia, the capital of Abia state, stopped a car from catching fire and potentially causing serious damage.
The car, a white GL450 Benz, was parked inside of the NIMC office, when the youths who had gone for registration of the NIN at the office noticed smoke coming from the vehicle.
The youths told Gift Egwube, a journalist in ABNTV that they noticed the smoke coming from the GL450 shortly after the owner had left the area.
Acting quickly, they broke the window with a stone and removed the car battery, but the fire persisted. One of the youths ran to get a fire extinguisher, but it was expired and wasn’t effective enough.
Gifted Egwube was at the scene if the incident and captured footage of the incident. Mr. Gifted spoke with some of the youths involved in the rescue, who said they were just doing what they thought was right and were happy to help prevent any injuries or loss of life. They also expressed their relief that no one was hurt and that the damage didn’t escalate too much.
