There was chaos in Umuezibe, Obingwa, along the Aba/Ikot Ekpene highway in Abia State, following the shocking discovery that the testicles of a deceased young man were missing from his corpse at a local mortuary.
The deceased, identified simply as Chimaobi, was reportedly electrocuted while tampering with high-tension electricity cables in Abayi Okorator. His body was subsequently deposited in the mortuary pending burial. However, when youths from his community arrived to retrieve the corpse, they were horrified to find that his genitals were missing.
The discovery sparked outrage, leading to a violent attack on the mortuary, with the facility being vandalized and its workers nearly lynched. Witnesses reported that the attendants attempted to flee the scene but were quickly apprehended by the enraged youths.
As tensions escalated, families with deceased relatives at the mortuary rushed to retrieve their loved ones’ remains, fearing further tampering. Some opted for immediate burials, while others relocated the bodies to different mortuaries.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the intervention of the police from the Eastern Ngwa division prevented the situation from deteriorating further. The mortuary attendants were reportedly taken into custody, though authorities have yet to provide official details.
A senior police officer in the area assured that the situation was under control but declined to give further comments on the matter. Investigations are expected to uncover the circumstances surrounding the alleged mutilation of Chimaobi’s corpse.
