The African Group at the World Trade Organization (WTO) presented a proposal to the WTO General Council today, urging members to consider Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term as Director-General, ABN TV reports.
During the General Council meeting, members from all regions praised Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts and qualities, highlighting her contributions to the organization that have driven progress and development. The consensus was clear: she deserved to be reappointed as Director-General.
A staggering 58 members from all regions took the floor to express their support for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s second term. The meeting concluded with a resolution, approved by the General Council, for the Chair to commence consultations on the appointment process of the Director-General as soon as possible.
This development sets the stage for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s potential reappointment as Director-General, a testament to her leadership and vision for the WTO.
The consultations are expected to begin shortly, paving the way for a formal decision on her second term.
