A woman, Oke Ere-Eganoma, has narrowly escaped being killed by her son, Emma Ere-Eganoma, who allegedly wanted to use her for ritual purposes.
The incident happened in in Okuokoko community, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State last Tuesday.
The suspect who is now in police custody reportedly invited his mother, who sells foodstuff in Okuokoko Market, to his apartment within the neighbourhood for a surprise gift.
On arrival at her son’s abode, the unsuspecting mother met him merry and blaring loud music from his home theatre.
It was gathered that after ushering his mother into his apartment, he jammed the metal door and began to butcher her mother with a machete.
The suspect, neighbours said, was also attempting to pluck out the eyes of his mother – a situation that led to stiff resistance and commotion.
The screams from the victim in spite of the loud music attracted neighbours who forcefully broke down the door and rescued her, before handing the son over to police operatives.
The woman, who was said to have sustained some deep cuts, is receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.
Reacting to the incident, acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the incident, however, noted that only the mother could tell if her son actually wanted to use her for ritual and that will be after her discharge from hospital.
“The boy is in custody, but we cannot ascertain if he was about using the mother for ritual because the mother is in the hospital.
“We are waiting for her to be discharged so she can tell us what happened. The boy said he was not using her for rituals.
“He just had some flimsy explanation, but we can’t come to a conclusion until we hear from the woman,” Edafe averred.
