A heavy windstorm on Monday, June 23, 2025, disrupted the grand finale of the 2024/2025 Abia State Secondary School Debate Prize Presentation Day, held at the premises of Vision Africa Radio 104.1 FM, Umuahia.
ABN TV reports that the annual event, organized in partnership with the Abia State Ministry of Education, aims to educate and inspire students through intellectual competition.
This year’s debate, with the theme “Is Social Media Impactful to Teenagers?”, attracted students from various schools across the state. Finalists included Methodist Girls High School Umueze Umuahia, Valley View College, Basic Foundation International Secondary School, and Ndume Otuma Memorial Secondary School.
The storm, which struck during the event, damaged some media equipment and temporarily halted proceedings. However, there were no injuries or loss of life.
In his reaction, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Founder of Vision Africa, described the incident as a natural disaster and expressed gratitude that no harm came to the students or guests. Some participants also confirmed they were safe and that no injuries occurred.
Despite the disruption, the organizers proceeded to complete the debate competition to declare a winner. The event continues on Tuesday, June 24, with a media training session for the students.
