We’ve All Agreed To Cooperate With Fubara – Wike

Former Rivers State Governor and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike confirmed Thursday evening that his long-standing political disagreement with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been settled.

The reconciliation followed a peace meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door session, Wike announced that both parties had reached a final agreement to end the months-long political tension and pledged to work together moving forward.

“We have all agreed to work with the governor, and the governor has agreed to work with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike said. He described the crisis as a normal disagreement that had now been conclusively settled.

“Like any human relationship, there can be disagreements, but there is also a time for resolution. That has been achieved today. We came to report the resolution to Mr. President. For me, this matter is now closed,” he stated.

Wike also appealed to political supporters to embrace the peace accord, emphasizing that the time for acrimony was over.

Echoing the sentiment, Governor Fubara described the breakthrough as a divine intervention and a crucial turning point for the state’s progress.

“Today is a day to thank Almighty God,” Fubara said. “Peace is what Rivers State needs for development. And by God’s grace, with the intervention of Mr. President and our leaders, peace has returned to the state.”

Fubara committed to upholding the newly restored unity, saying, “We’ll do everything within our power to sustain this peace.”

The political conflict between Wike and Fubara began shortly after Fubara took office in May 2023. Tensions peaked in October when lawmakers aligned with Wike launched impeachment proceedings against the governor.

In response, Fubara ordered the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly building after a suspicious fire incident, relocating legislative activities to an alternative site. The escalating power struggle plunged the state into a prolonged governance crisis.

President Tinubu first intervened in December 2023, brokering a fragile peace that saw Fubara cede several political appointments to Wike’s allies. However, the truce eventually collapsed.

In March 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara’s executive powers for six months. Citing worsening insecurity and administrative breakdown, the president appointed retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as sole administrator.

Thursday’s renewed agreement signals a potential end to the impasse, raising hopes for a return to political stability and effective governance in Rivers State.
