Wagner Crisis Shows Ukraine War ‘Cracking Russian Power’ — EU

Wagner’s failed rebellion demonstrates how Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine is splintering Russian power, according to the EU’s top diplomat, who warned that instability in the nuclear-armed country is “not a good thing.”

“What happened this weekend demonstrates that Russia’s war against Ukraine is fracturing its power and affecting its political system,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said at a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers.

“It’s certainly not a good sign that a nuclear power like Russia can fall into a state of instability.” It is also something that must be considered,” Borrell told the media.

“The most important conclusion is that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war against Ukraine and the monster that Putin created with Wagner, the monster is biting him,” he said.

“The monster is acting against its creator, the political system is showing the fragilities and the military power is cracking,” Borrell said.

At their regular conference in Luxembourg, EU foreign ministers were scrambling to grasp the aftermath of the revolt.

Tobias Billstrom, Sweden’s Foreign Minister, called the upheaval an “internal affair” for Russia.
