Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over ongoing violence in Nigeria, calling for urgent action to protect both Christians and Muslims affected by the growing insecurity across the country.
Responding to a question on the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria, the Pope said the situation is complex and goes beyond religion. He explained that while Christians in certain regions face severe danger, many Muslims have also been victims of killings, displacement, and terror attacks.
“In Nigeria, in certain areas, there is certainly danger for Christians, but for all people. Christians and Muslims have been slaughtered,” Pope Leo XIV stated.
He emphasized that terrorism, economic struggles, and disputes over land ownership are major drivers of the crisis rather than solely religious differences.
“There’s a question of terrorism. There’s a question that has to do a lot with economics, if you will, in control of the lands that they have,” he noted, acknowledging the tragic loss of lives. “Unfortunately, many Christians have died.”
The Pope urged the Nigerian government, religious leaders, and citizens to work together in promoting peace, tolerance, and mutual respect. He stressed that building Nigeria’s future requires a commitment to “authentic religious freedom” and equal protection for all ethnic and religious communities.
“I think it’s very important to seek a way the government with all people to promote authentic religious freedom and respect for all people,” he added.
Nigeria has continued to grapple with insecurity, including terrorist insurgencies, armed herders, banditry, communal clashes, and religious tensions affecting several regions.
Pope Leo XIV’s remarks add to growing global calls urging Nigerian authorities to accelerate efforts toward peace, justice, and the protection of vulnerable communities.
