‘Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has defended the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that Nigeria’s current hardships are a result of long-overdue reforms that ended the culture of “cheap money.”

Speaking during an interaction with journalists at the National Assembly, the former Abia State Governor said that Tinubu’s bold decisions — including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate — marked a turning point in Nigeria’s economic history.

“This is the first President who stopped the subsidy and the first who merged the dollar. That’s why we are suffering. Nigerians are not used to working hard. We are used to getting cheap money,” Kalu stated.

Declaring his support for the President’s policies, he added, “I’m not a sycophant. I’m speaking as someone who understands both politics and business. These reforms were necessary.”

Kalu acknowledged the pain many Nigerians are facing but maintained that the hardship is transitional and would yield long-term benefits. He argued that previous administrations failed to make the tough calls required to stabilize the economy.

The former Senate Chief Whip insisted that Tinubu’s administration is resetting the economy on a more sustainable path, even if the results are not immediately felt by the average citizen.

“This government is saying: work hard, earn legitimately, and build a real economy. That’s the only way we can grow,” he concluded.
