VIDEO: Ex-Abia Councillor Flogged, Detained By Youths Over Alleged Insult To Serving Member

A former councillor in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Mr. Uduma Uguru, popularly known as Makiba, has alleged that he was lured, beaten, and detained by youths of Amaekpu Ohafia over claims that he disrespected a serving councillor in the area.

Makiba, who spoke during an exclusive episode of the “Talk Make I Talk Podcast”, recounted how the ugly incident began after a disagreement at a road construction site involving the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA). According to him, the misunderstanding started when he referred to the Deputy Leader of the Ohafia Legislative Council, Hon. Daniel Eke Urum, as “that guy” during a heated exchange.

“I called him ‘that guy’ because I didn’t know his name,” he said. “Before I knew it, I was surrounded, slapped, and dragged away. They flogged me mercilessly and detained me in a secret cell. I was only released after I transferred ₦100,000.”

A trending video of the incident has since gone viral across social media platforms, showing Makiba being flogged in public by a group of youths in Amaekpu Ohafia. The footage also captured moments when the attackers stepped on his laps and knees, while others shouted orders demanding that he pay a fine before being freed.

Reports indicate that the former councillor was accused of failing to pay for a tipper truck allegedly hired for a direct labour road project in the area, a claim he strongly denies.

The video has drawn massive condemnation from across Abia State and beyond, with residents describing the assault as barbaric, uncivilized, and a clear case of jungle justice. Many have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.

Makiba disclosed that he had earlier responded to a petition at the Ohafia Area Command before the incident and has since reported the assault to the police for investigation. He appealed to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Commissioner of Police to ensure justice is served.

“My appeal to His Excellency is simple: I need justice,” he said. “If I had reacted that night, I might have been a dead man today. The law must take its course.”

He added that despite being from the same ward as the Deputy Governor of Abia State, he has yet to receive any call or sympathy from him since the incident.

The former lawmaker said he is still undergoing medical treatment following the brutal attack and would consult with his community and family before deciding on further action.

“What happened to me is already on the internet,” he said. “Even after thirty years, people will still see it. I want the government to act and stop this kind of impunity.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Amaekpu Youth leadership, Hon. Daniel Eke Urum, and other parties mentioned have not issued any official statements.
