A woman from Florida, USA named Sarah Boone was given a life sentence for trapping her boyfriend in a suitcase and letting him suffocate to death.
Circuit Judge Michael Kraynick imposed the sentence on Boone, 47, on Monday.
On October 25, Boone was found guilty by a jury of second-degree murder of 42-year-old boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., in February 2020.
Prosecutors told the court how the convict zipped her boyfriend into a suitcase and recorded a video of herself taunting him as he begged her to let him out.
Instead, she went to bed and left him stuck inside overnight.
When she unzipped the suitcase in the morning, she found him unresponsive and called emergency services.
During her 10-day trial, Boone insisted she was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Torres and rejected a plea deal offer of a 15-year sentence.
Several members of Torres’ family testified at the trial, highlighting how his death had profoundly affected them.
The victim’s mother, Blanca Torres, said Boone had “not only killed my son; she killed a father, a brother, and an uncle.”
“Sometimes when I look out the window, I’m waiting for him to come and say, ‘Mom, I love you,’” she said.
