The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly floods that ravaged Niger State last week, claiming the lives of at least 151 people and displacing over 3,000 residents.
In a statement posted Monday on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the US Mission extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and acknowledged the work of emergency responders.
“The US Mission is deeply saddened by the news of last Friday’s devastating floods that have impacted Niger State.
“During this time of immense loss and hardship, our hearts are with all those who are grieving the loss of loved ones, displaced by loss of homes and livelihoods, or struggling to find shelter.
“We are holding in our thoughts you and the federal and state emergency workers who are working to provide relief and alleviate the effects of this disaster,” the statement read.
The floods, which struck with little warning, have triggered a significant humanitarian crisis across several communities in the state.
According to Niger State Government officials, the disaster led to the destruction of more than 260 homes and severely damaged critical infrastructure, including township roads and major bridges in the Mokwa and Raba areas.
In response to the scale of the devastation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday dispatched a high-level delegation to assess the damage and support local relief efforts.
State authorities have since called for increased federal and international aid to help mitigate the crisis and support the displaced.
