Uniform Can’t Protect You From Prosecution If… Ag. DG Warns NYSC Members

The acting Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Christy Uba, has cautioned corps members against actions capable of tarnishing the image of the scheme.

She warned that the national service uniform did not confer immunity against criminal prosecution on them.

Uba gave the warning after reviewing a colourful parade marking the successful end of the 2022 Batch C, Stream I Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Kaiama Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The acting DG who was represented by the Bayelsa State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr Muhammed Jiya, described corps members as patriots on national assignment who were expected to live an exemplary lifestyle in order to show that they were truly qualified in character and learning.

The NYSC boss said, “Particularly, the corps members are enjoined to avoid keeping late nights and shun cultism, drug abuse, prostitution, kidnapping and armed robbery.

“The national uniform you are wearing does not confer on you any unique advantage nor immune you from criminal prosecution.

“Therefore, resist any temptation that will get you involved in any nefarious activities that may bring the name of your family, Alma Mata, NYSC and the nation at large into disrepute.”

She warned corps members to be non-partisan because they have a critical role to play in the electoral process during the 2023 general elections.

She also cautioned those who would be posted to riverine areas to avoid travelling on water without a life jacket.
