Uche Ogah Calls For Implementation Of Child Rights Act In Abia

Dr. Uche Ogah, the Abia State Gubernatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the coming 2023 general elections, has made case for the domestication and implementation of the Child Rights Act in the state.

He maintained that the child rights act must be domesticated and utterly reviewed to strengthen the law and offer 360-degree protection and sustained assurance of the alienable rights of Abia children.

Ogah who was speaking on Tuesday, also maintained that Abia must embark on all possible avenues to boost the child rights act and effectively implement the law so that children will have the best possible foundation which will guide them as they mature into adults.

According to him, the complete implementation of the Child Right Act will assure a great future for Abia state.

“The children of our state must be protected from exploitation, child trafficking, baby factory menace, sexual assault, physical or bodily abuse, emotional or mental abuse, bullying, abandonment or neglect, and in fact, any form of abuse of Abia children.

“I have painstakingly espoused on this as a result of my affinity to children and in my personal capacity as an ordinary citizen, I have floated programmes to help ameliorate the plight of children both in Abia state and beyond, ” Ogah disclosed.

The frontline APC Governorship standard-bearer assured that when supported to attain the office of Governor of Abia State in 2023, his administration will confront any form of abuse targeted at the children in Abia State and ensure the full domestication and implementation of the Child Rights Act in the state.

Ogah, who was the immediate past Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, also promised to ensure
any perpetrators of actions that negate the provisions of the Child Rights Act will be severely dealt with in line with extant laws of the land.

His words: “To signpost my commitment to the children of Abia State and their parents, my administration will review the child Rights Act on a consistent basis to mitigate any emerging threats to the safety of our children and confer assurance of all their rights through appropriate Child-centred agencies of government”.

Recall that the Child Rights Act became an act of the National Assembly of Nigeria in 2003 and guarantees the rights of all Nigerian children to survive, right to a name, recreation, dignity, education, health care, right to privacy, family life, cultural activities, protection from economic and sexual exploitation among other situations, conscience, and religion, freedom of expression among others.
