Two Students Of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Dead In Private Hostel

Two persons suspected to be students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra state have been found dead in a private hostel room close to the institution.

The male and female bodies were found on Sunday afternoon after the door to the room said to be belonging to the girl was broken by neighbours.

When our Correspondent visited the Williams hostel, a student who did not want her name mentioned, said the bodies which were already decomposing were seen after a lady raised the alarm.

According to her, the woman believed to be a relation of the deceased girl, had been calling her cell phone without any success before she decided to visit the hostel to ascertain why she was not answering her calls.

On getting to the down floor room of the two storey building hostel, she noticed the phone was ringing inside leading to her shouting and calling out neighbors and security who helped in forcing the door open.

The eye witness who said she lives upstairs however confirmed that she had been perceiving the stench odour for few days but did not know where it was coming from.

” I live upstairs here,I don’t even know the girl who live there well. I have I perceived odour few days ago but did not know where it was coming from. Not until a woman came here and started shouting and crying. She is the owner of the room as I heard. We pay one hundred and eighty thousand naira here”

Other residents of the area said the girl was a student of the University but that they could not ascertain the identity of the male partner.

In an interview, the Chief Security Officer of the Institution, Chief Ken Chukwurah confirmed that the female victim was a one hundred level student of the school while the identity of the male victim was not yet established.

Chief Chukuwurah however noted that investigation was still on going to know the cause of the incident which he described as unfortunate.

Nobody knew what actually happened. Its only autopsy that can confirm. But ordinary eye, we discovered that the room was scattered , it appeared as if there was scuffle , struggling and the rest of it. And we also discovered that there was a generating set close to the room , apparently it went off after fuel finished. So nobody can say what happened”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state , Mr Tochukwu Ikenga said The students may have died from inhaling carbon monoxide poising from generator fumes but that the result of the autopsy will confirm the actual cause of death.

Mr Ikenga said the generator was found in a owes place facing the room which is on the down floor of the building.

Our Correspondent reports that though academic activities had been paralyzed following the strike by ASUU, some students were seen within and outside the school hostels including the building were the sad incident occurred.
