U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his country’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only viable solution to the long-standing territorial dispute, according to a report by state news agency MAP, cited by Reuters.

In a message of congratulations sent to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day, President Trump emphasized continued U.S. support for Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara issue.

“I reiterate that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute,” Trump stated in his message to the King.

Morocco commemorates Throne Day annually on July 30 to mark King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne. The 2025 celebration marks the 26th anniversary of the monarch’s reign.
