Thomas Partey Granted Bail In UK Court Over Rape Charges

Former Arsenal and Ghana international midfielder Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London to face multiple charges of rape and sexual assault.

The 32-year-old has been formally charged with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022, during his tenure as an Arsenal player.

Partey was charged just four days after his contract with Arsenal expired at the end of June.

Dressed in a black zip-neck jumper, the midfielder stood in the dock with his arms behind his back as the charges were read out in court.

According to British police, the investigation began after they received a report of rape in February 2022.

Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, previously stated that he “denies all the charges against him” and added that he welcomed “the opportunity to finally clear his name.”

Partey joined Arsenal in October 2020 in a £45 million ($60 million) transfer from Spanish club Atlético Madrid. During his time at the Emirates, he played 167 matches for the Gunners, scoring nine goals—including four last season in 52 appearances.

Internationally, he has earned 51 caps for Ghana.

Responding to the matter, an Arsenal spokesperson confirmed: “The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case.”

Recent reports have linked Partey with a potential move to Spanish club Villarreal, though no deal has been confirmed.
