BARELY weeks after a reported peace agreement, suspected bandits have carried out a deadly raid on Chibauna community in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State, leaving two people dead and abducting more than 50 women.
The assailants struck late Sunday night, also rustling large numbers of livestock, including cattle and sheep, during the attack.
Confirming the incident in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Monday night, local councillor Malam Abdurasheed said the gunmen fired sporadically, causing panic among residents.
“Two persons were killed, and several others sustained gunshot injuries. They are currently receiving medical attention in a hospital,” he said.
Abdurasheed added that although more than 50 women were initially abducted, some managed to escape and have since returned safely to the community.
He appealed to the military and other security agencies to urgently intervene, intensify security operations, and secure the release of those still in captivity.
The attack has renewed fears among residents and raised serious concerns over the effectiveness of the recent peace agreement, highlighting the worsening security situation in parts of Katsina State.
