Supreme Court To Deliver Judgment In Osun Guber Election Dispute May 9

The contested governorship election in Osun State was held on July 16, and the Supreme Court on Monday set a decision-making date of Tuesday, May 9.

After hearing arguments from the parties engaged in the case, the supreme court set a 24-hour deadline for the judgment’s delivery.

The incumbent governor Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, who ran for governor on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ticket, and Adegboyega Oyetola, who ran for governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, are at the center of the contested election.

However, Adeleke is the main respondent who prevailed in the Court of Appeal ruling, whilst Oyetola is the appellant in the Supreme Court case after losing at the Court of Appeal.

On May 9, around 2:00 p.m., the Supreme Court will issue the definitive ruling. The APC was represented at today’s proceedings by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

On Friday, March 24, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned the tribunal’s decision invalidating the election of Ademola Adeleke as governor of Osun State.

In a unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel, the appellate court determined that Adeleke’s appeal against being fired by the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal was meritorious.

Besides overturning the tribunal’s decision, the court awarded the All Progressive Congress, APC, and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, N500,000 in costs in its lead judgment, which was delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal.
