The legal team representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has once again called for his immediate release, insisting that his continued detention is unlawful.
During a routine visit on Monday, the legal team, led by Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed that Kanu remains resolute in his stance that he is being persecuted for exercising his right to self-determination.
In a statement issued after the visit made available to ABN TV, Ejimakor emphasized that Kanu was unlawfully renditioned and detained for championing self-determination, a right recognized under Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which Nigeria adopted in 1983.
Key Points from Kanu’s Legal Team:
1. Unlawful Prosecution: Kanu is being tried for pursuing a legally recognized right, making his prosecution an attempt to discredit a legitimate agitation.
2. Demand for an Impartial Court: If the federal government believes it has a case, it should constitute an independent and competent court to handle the matter.
3. Allegations of Double Standards: The legal team accused the same individuals calling on Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State to obey the Supreme Court ruling of advising President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to ignore the court’s judgment in Kanu’s case.
The legal team warned that disobedience to judicial rulings undermines Nigeria’s democracy and called on the federal government to uphold the rule of law by releasing Kanu.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and repatriated to Nigeria in 2021 under controversial circumstances. Despite multiple court rulings questioning the legality of his trial, he remains in detention.
