Just 10 minutes later, Mina Tanaka doubled Japan’s advantage, leaving the Super Falcons, who needed a victory to stand any chance in the competition, reeling. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when PSG’s new star, Jennifer Echegini, pulled one back for Nigeria with a stunning strike in the 42nd minute, halving the deficit.

But the reprieve was short-lived, as Japan’s Kitagawa restored their two-goal cushion in the dying moments of the first half with a world-class free-kick, leaving the Super Falcons shattered.
The second half saw the Nigerian side desperately try to mount a comeback, but the ruthless Japanese defence proved too much to handle.
Despite their valiant efforts, the Super Falcons were unable to find the back of the net again, and the game ended in a 3-1 defeat.
