Sudanese Military Leader, Burhan Survives Assassination Attempt

Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan the military leader of Sudan has survived an assassination attempt, the army spokesman, Nabil Abdallah said on Wednesday.

Abdallah accused the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of being behind the plot to murder the country’s military leader.

RSF and the army have been on a deadly battle since April last in quest to take over control of government structure.

Two drones had struck an army graduation ceremony killing five people at a base in Jabait in the east – territory under the control of the military, the spokesman stated.

This comes ahead of US-backed peace talk between two rival groups in Washington next month.

Previous talks to end the 16-month conflict, which has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis collapsed with as the two warring parties refused to honour their commitments.

Video footage being shared from those attending the ceremony on Wednesday morning shows military graduates marching in ceremonial dress before the sound of a strike.

“The only party that is hostile to the Sudanese people and targeting the Sudanese people is the rebel Rapid Support Forces,” Gen Abdallah told the BBC.

He thanked God that Gen Burhan and “all the commanders present are fine” and that there not many major injuries.

Heritage Times HT reports that over 10 million people have fled their homes since RSF leader, a former ally of the military leader fell out.

The Jabait army base is about 100km from Port Sudan, the military’s de facto capital and where Gen Burhan is based.
