Stop Using Social Media To Abuse, Incite — Ikpeazu Urges

As debate for regulation of social media continues, Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has advised all to avoid abusive, maligning, and inciting comments through the platform.

While admitting citizens’ right to free speech, the governor in a tweet on Thursday said social media is susceptible to abuse just like the regular media.

He, therefore, urged social media users to practice self-censorship to avoid infringement on rights of others.

He said, “I have followed with keen interest developments surrounding the proposed regulation of social media. While I agree that social media, just like any other medium can be subject to abuse, I support the freedom of expression by citizens as enshrined and guaranteed in our Constitution, I strongly urge all to practice the principle of self-regulation in their use of social media in a way that will not lead to maligning, abusing, inciting anyone or spreading falsehood”.
