Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has warned traders who do business along School Road Aba that his administration will shut down the market permanently if they do not improve the sanitary conditions of the area.
The Governor made this known on Sunday when he received a report of the ongoing desilting of the major drainage channel that passes through the area.
In a release available to ABN TV, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onyebuchi Ememanka, Ikpeazu expressed deep sadness and disappointment that people take delight in sabotaging the efforts of government in keeping our State clean through deliberately converting drainages channels into refuse dumps.
School Road has one of the biggest and most advanced drainage channels in Aba, designed to collect stormwater from different parts of Aba into the Aba River.

However the unwholesome activities of the traders around the area has led to the blocking of the channels leading to flooding in different parts of Aba town.
Governor Ikpeazu made it clear that his administration will not allow a group of people who have no regard for decency to plunge the entire town into a flood disaster under the guise of doing business and directs the Honorable Commissioners for Trade and Investment, Works, Environment and the Transition Committee Chairman of Aba South LGA to meet with the leadership of the traders there and deliver government’s position to them.
According to the Governor, if this unfortunate situation continues, the government shall shut down the market permanently, as government cannot continue to spend scarce resources in abating nuisance created deliberately by people who have absolutely no regard for their own health and safety.
