Medical activities at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital (FUTH) have come to a complete halt following the nationwide strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
A visit to the hospital revealed deserted wards and empty corridors, as patients on admission were evacuated and health workers from the emergency, outpatient, and antenatal units abandoned their posts.
The strike, which began last Saturday, has left many citizens stranded, with the hospital—one of Nasarawa State’s busiest—effectively shut down.
Leading an inspection tour to monitor compliance, NARD State President, Dr. Jude Yepowudu, decried the worsening conditions faced by resident doctors, blaming the government’s neglect for the industrial action.
“Resident doctors make up the backbone of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce, yet we continue to face hardship and broken promises,” Dr. Yepowudu said. “This strike is not just about salaries — it’s about survival. Many of us can no longer afford rent, fuel, or even basic necessities.”
Patients who spoke to Vanguard expressed deep frustration and urged swift government intervention. Mrs. Grace Peter and Hajiya Larai Abdullahi, both expectant mothers, said they were turned away from the antenatal and scan units.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Mrs. Peter lamented. “We came for antenatal care but were told to go home because doctors are on strike. The government should meet their demands so hospitals can reopen.”
As the strike lingers, anxiety is mounting among patients and their families, especially those in need of urgent care. Meanwhile, private hospitals in Lafia are witnessing a surge in patient numbers as residents seek alternative treatment options.
