Seven Perish In Imo Road Crash

An articulated vehicle, popularly known as trailer lost control and crushed three minibusses, leaving seven persons feared dead in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Saturday.

The truck hit about 20 persons at the Imo State University junction in Owerri after the driver lost control of the vehicle, Punch reports.

The incident occurred around 7pm on Saturday night.

Sources said the heavy-duty truck was driving against traffic and eventually rammed into three minibusses with nine passengers each including the drivers.

Some of the victims were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Hospital Owerri for treatment, while seven others confirmed dead had been deposited at the morgue.

An eyewitness who gave his name as Emeka noted that the buses were hit in quick succession because they were driving close to each other

A crowd subsequently besieged FUTHO to look for their relatives.

Gridlock took over the busy Okigwe Road as people rushed to the accident scene while the affected vehicles were blocking a major part of the road.

Efforts made to reach the police spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, were not successful as his telephone line was not reachable as of the time of filing this report.
